Learn all about Dutch Jewish culture, traditions and history

Jewish culture in the Netherlands has had a tremendous influence on the development of the country and particularly its capital Amsterdam. Although severely affected by the events of World War II, there has been a steady Jewish population in the area for over 800 years. The Jewish Cultural Quarter offers a unique glimpse into a rich history which has been highly influential and intertwined in all aspects of Amsterdam’s development.

The attractions of the Jewish Cultural Quarter are home to an enormous collection of several thousand objects, documents, and works of art, as well as a changing number of temporary exhibitions. The Jewish Cultural Quarter consists of five different locations that take you on a journey through the Jewish quarter and over 400 years of Jewish history in Amsterdam and gives you a glimpse into Jewish life in all its facets.

Take a walk through Amsterdam’s old Jewish neighbourhood

At the Jewish Cultural Quarter, you can discover an insightful, chronological overview of the Jewish community’s significant contributions to the art and history of the Netherlands. The Jewish Museum occupies four monumental synagogue buildings and provides a unique picture of the past and present of Jewish Dutch Life. Children can learn more about the topic in the attached JMH Children's Museum.

The Portuguese Synagogue is located at the heart of the Jewish Cultural Quarter. Discover the perfectly preserved 17th century interior and a unique collection of ceremonial objects here. It is also home to Ets Haim Livraria Montezinos, the world's oldest intact Jewish library, that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The quarter further consists of the Hollandsche Schouwburg and the National Holocaust Museum, telling the story of the persecution of Jewish people in the Netherlands and providing a place of commemoration for all the people deported during World War II.
