The Rijksmuseum is the largest art museum in the Netherlands and boasts an impressive collection of world-famous works by such masters as Vincent Van Gogh, Johannes Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Rembrandt van Rijn. With the help of both artworks and historical artefacts, the national museum of the Netherlands tells the story of 800 years of Dutch art and history.
The collection contains more than one million pieces and has about 8,000 objects including paintings, sculptures, and historical artifacts on display, spanning from the year 1200 to the present. Some of the most notable art works on display include Rembrandt’s The Night Watch (1642), Vermeer’s The Milkmaid (1647), and one of Van Gogh’s untitled self-portraits (1887).
The Rijksmuseum takes you all the way from the Middle Ages to Mondrian. As well as featuring beautiful art work, some of the top attractions in the museum also include their collection of doll’s houses, model ships and armoury. And the Cuypers Library is the largest and oldest art historical library in the Netherlands. Visitors, students and art historians alike are welcome to use the library to delve deeper into the Rijksmuseum collection.
The current building of the Rijksmuseum, designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers, first opened its doors in 1885 and has been a national heritage site since 1970. The most recent renovation project has made sure the museum continues to function as a connection between the past and the present as it combines the old with the modern. The atrium features a high glass ceiling and spacious, contemporary architecture that blends uniquely with the traditional red-brick walls.

It's definitely a must-see The building, the library, the history, the art, the paintings, the artefacts. It's remarkable. I felt sad onde I've seen it all. Reserve a morning just to go there

This was well worth the price of admission. The museum itself is breathtaking and the art tells the rich history of the Netherlands. It is well worth paying a little extra and getting the headset that explains many of the pieces and their relevance to the Netherlands. Book in advance as it is by appointment. The grounds around the museum are beautiful as well and there are always musicians playing in the area near the entrance. Give yourself plenty of time to take in all the beautiful art as well as design of the building.

If you can only spend a short time, go directly to the Gallery of Honor. So many great paintings to see and enjoy. The Night Watch was behind glass walls as the museum works on its scheduled maintenance, but you can still see and enjoy this magnificent piece of art. Enjoy the rest of the great paintings and other items as well.

My wife and I came here on a weekend trip to Amsterdam. It us tough to try to do everything this city has to offer un such a short time. However, we did make it here. This place is a very modernly decorated museum featuring several works by Rembrandt and Vermeer, but only one Van Gogh and one Goya. Still, there is magnificent art to be enjoyed in a beautiful setting. Come see it all!

A treasure-trove. I have been almost every time I have been to Amsterdam, and learned from new interesting items every time. And a super band busking in the entrance - who'd ever heard of Vivaldi on a Balalaika ? !

This museum is a must-see; my partner is not an art person, and he was still happy he went. Even so we spent 3.5 hours there and ended up having the skip the Medieval/Rennaisance floor. Seeing the Dutch painters was incredible. You really don't understand the brilliance of these until you are there. What surprised me the most was the coverage of art from the colonies; I've been to many former colonizers, and the Dutch are truly the most progressive. Numerous times, people apologized to me because I live in formerly colonized land, and the museums reflect his. I saw art from the American and Asian colonies. There were only two small disappointments: the audioguide was a bit difficult to navigate, but it was okay because I ended up just scanning each painting that I was interested in, and that was much better. The second is that there is only one Van Gogh; you'd definitely need to go to the Van Gogh Museum for that.

I think we chose the busiest day to visit museums while on holiday in Amsterdam. The Amsterdam Marathon crowded the streets, park, and surrounding area for the entire day. Fighting crowds outside the museum and inside the Rijksmuseum was a little overwhelming! I decided not to stress searching for the masterpieces within the very large Rijksmuseum, so I just wandered around and took pictures of things that appealed to me! I enjoyed my time in the museum, but if ever in Amsterdam again, I will definitely try to choose a quieter day for my visit.

Beautiful building and a lot to see! Our group picked up our audio guide & went on our own. On the ground level are free keylockers, which are free to place my personal things. After using the restroom, it was convenient to go back to the locker & drink from my water bottle vs going in check line. I didn't realize I was there for 6 hours! You can take photos, but NO flash. They have a restaurant, small cafe & gift shop. Everyone was helpful.
