The journey of the diamond started 3 billion years ago, 200 kilometres beneath the surface. The museum explains every step a diamond has to take before it becomes a piece of jewellery. The Diamond Museum Amsterdam, established in 2007, will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about these stones. It is the only museum in Europe that completely revolves around diamonds.
The permanent exhibition consists of 15 different themes, which will show you all the different facets of diamonds. From the origins of diamonds to the craft of diamond polishing and onto some of the most amazing masterpieces. You can see the jewels of the Dutch royal family and the smallest cut diamond in the world, and learn the difference between a real and a fake diamond. The museum also houses temporary exhibitions about different subjects concerning diamonds.
Diamonds in Amsterdam have a history that goes way back. Amsterdam has had a blooming diamond industry ever since the Dutch Golden Age, during the 16th and 17th century. Famous diamonds like the Cullinan (the largest uncut diamond ever found) and the Koh-I-Noor (Mountain of Light) have been polished in Amsterdam.
At the end of the 19th century, there were more than 700 polishing wheels in use in Amsterdam. This is why Amsterdam proudly called itself ‘the city of diamonds’ during its heyday. This history of diamonds in Amsterdam makes this city the most logical and fascinating place for a diamond museum.
Polish up your knowledge about diamonds and visit the Diamond Museum in Amsterdam. This is a brilliant museum you don’t want to miss. The Diamond Museum is housed in a 17th-century villa at the Museum Square.
Which means it is close to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, but also to Coster Diamonds which is one of few the still existing diamond factories in Amsterdam. Here you can easily and safely book your Diamond Museum tickets and be assured of entry to this fascinating museum.

Loved seeing the story of diamonds and then all the pretty sparkles. We had a great couple of hours across the 2 sites.

Pleasantly surprised by this little museum. We weren't sure which diamond museum to go to, so we just walked past and picked this one. The introductory video about diamond mines, diamond locations, and the Kimberly Mine were really interesting. Then you walk around and view replicas of famous crowns/headdresses decorated with diamonds through history. You end with a few famous jeweled items, like a tennis racket and skull. We went midday and there were a few other visitors No food clean bathrooms stairs leave bags in complimentary lockers gift shop filled with...diamond jewelry, of course 2 hours or less

I have done this tour twice now once with a guide and last week on our own. Would recommend a private tour as Pauline is so informative

A surprisingly, wonderful museum. All sbout the history of diamonds. Lots of beautiful objects. One small criticism, they think Kim Clijsters is Dutch, she is actually Belgian.
