ARTIS Royal Zoo is the Netherlands’ oldest zoo and one of Amsterdam’s most popular tourist attractions. ARTIS was founded in 1838 and is a unique zoo with thousands of animals which also features a planetarium, a zoological museum, the world’s only microscopic life exhibit (entry to Micropia requires a separate ticket), and 27 monuments.
Here you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the lively city centre. Stroll through the magnificent gardens under the shade of the old trees and be amazed by a world full of exotic animal and plant life.
The Amsterdam Royal Zoo is most commonly known as ARTIS, which is part of the museum’s official name in Latin, Natura Artis Magistra. It is located in the east of the city, near the botanical gardens, the Dutch Resistance Museum and the National Maritime Museum.
The enchanting Amsterdam zoo is home to more than 550 different animal species and over 700 trees and plant types. Visit the Savanne, where giraffes live side by side with the zebras and kudus. Or spend your day in the company of sea lions, elephants, jaguars, or chimps and learn more about their natural habitats. ARTIS also boasts an impressive butterfly pavilion and Insectarium, which is climate-controlled to replicate their natural environment.
The 19th-century buildings include an exhibit where you can learn more about the city’s long history with water and canals. Amsterdam’s Royal Zoo also has a planetarium, where you’ll be taken on an exciting journey into outer space to discover more about the stars and our galaxy. ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo is a unique and unforgettable experience that is sure to be cherished by children and adults alike!
You can book a visit to ARTIS Royal Zoo quickly and easily right here. Get ready for a fantastic day at the zoo during your visit to Amsterdam. If you also want to visit Micropia, you can save money and buy a combination ticket. Click here for more information and to view tickets. Both are easily reached with trams from across the city.

Reasonably price zoo with a variety of different species of animals. Well kept and managed to a high standard. But there’s also a lot of upgrading to certain enclosures so not as much to see as they would normally be

This is the second time we have visited Artis Zoo , going 2 years in a row. Zoo is excellent, many different animals to see laid out in a spacious, well kept and easy to get round. Manged to see and get up close to animals such as, Black Panther, Giraffe, Red Panda, Chimpanzees Gorilla, Zebra and many many more. The indoor rain forest, Insectariium and Planiterium are all again excellent and very informative. Staff very friendly and helpful Weather was also great both times we went, which helped. Would 100% recommend if you are in Amsterdam!! The Clarks from Scotland .

Great zoo, very clean. Spent half a say here and there was lots to see. Didn't get a glimpse of the Jaguar, that was the only thing we missed. Very well laid out and mostly flat, which is a bonus!

Ok. I'll admit that my timing might have been rare, but my wife and I struck zoo-gold with this place. Besides being a wonderful layout, ALL of the animals were active, walking, playing or otherwise "entertaining" us humans with them being......animals. Some reviews were not so stellar stating the small size of the zoo. Really? Well, if you're used to the San Diego or Indianapolis zoos, then sure, you'll breeze through this zoo relatively quick. But please don't let that keep you from this gem. And, if you do go, you might as well visit the nearby botanical gardens and exhibit which was also wonderful.

We had the most amazing weather when we visited Artis. Really hot and sunny! We loved the zoo and would definitely visit again. The butterfly section was surprisingly our favourite part. So worth going into the butterfly section if you visit!!

The love and respect for all animals grows with every minute you walk here. What a wonderful stories we heard about father and son ape, having lost their mother, the spectaculair view on the hierarchy among gorilla's.

Despite the crowd this is a very relaxing experience. The grounds are really beautiful and there’s lots of shade for those warmer days. My favourite was the butterfly house but lots of other good things. I didn’t get to see the planetarium. Several places to have lunch and/or coffee and a snack (including right next to the penguins, which is great if you are with young children). Entry price seems a bit expensive but I haven’t been to a zoo for a long time and I don’t know how it compares.

The Artis Zoo is my favorite zoo in the world! I visit Amsterdam once a year for vacation from the United States. My first visit is always the Artis Zoo. It is beautiful and the animal exabits are wonderful. The walking trails are full of trees, plants and flowers. The zoo offers plenty of good food. It is easy to get to by the city tram. Dierentuin Artis is mijn favoriete dierentuin ter wereld! Ik bezoek Amsterdam één keer per jaar voor vakantie vanuit de Verenigde Staten. Mijn eerste bezoek is altijd dierentuin Artis.
