National Maritime Museum

Amsterdam
Maritime history of the Netherlands
The National Maritime Museum (het Scheepvaartmuseum in Dutch) in Amsterdam is dedicated to the Netherlands’ legendary naval history. The museum contains an impressive maritime collection of historical objects including weapons, paintings, world maps, navigation instruments and scale models.
The National Maritime Museum is housed in the impressive former arsenal of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, which dates back to 1656. The courtyard now features an elaborate glass ceiling with a design reminiscent of a compass rose. The National Maritime Museum is one of the country’s most visited museums, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
Discover and experience 500 years of naval domination
The Maritime Museum will give you a glimpse into Holland’s long and prosperous relation to the sea. The museum's exhibits are both in and outside the building. At the jetty there are several ships, some of which you can board, such as the replica Dutch East Indiaman ship Amsterdam. The museum also features several other exhibits and an extensive collection of historical artefacts from the Dutch Golden Age.
When you've stepped aboard the VOC ship Amsterdam you can also travel back in time to the Golden Age with the Dare to Discover VR journey. This virtual journey takes you on a flight over the historic harbour of 17th century Amsterdam. You'll experience how the harbour flourished, see how new land emerged from the sea and merchants from different countries brought in and ship out their goods. The VR tour starts every 15 minutes and is suitable for children of 7 years and up.

A really huge museum
I must admit this museum was much larger than I expected. Some sections were easy to anticipate, but others really astonished me. Probably the most attractive ones are about whales and waling, as well as the ship East Indiaman Amsterdam. There were three more ships to visit for an additional payment, but I skipped that and yet was exhausted after exploring all exhibitions. Plan to have more than 3 hours for a visit. A disclaimer: I was there in August, 2023, not September.

Good place to visit
Well worth a visit. Audio tour was good . Fantastic exhibits. Really liked the SV Amsterdam . Some unique historical navigation instruments and some wonderful scale models .

The big ship was neat, but kinda spendy for just that
For the price not sure I would do it again, but the big ship was pretty neat. Otherwise the inside stuff was didn’t seem to be maritime related too much. I’ve been to better:

Maritime history you don’t know!
Beautiful 14th, 15th and 16th century paintings of ships and battles. The map room was especially interesting. It was surprising to see that Dutch sailors trading with China and Japan in the 14th century. Take a tour of the replica of a ship; that’s probably the most interesting thing for kids. The courtyard has tables and chairs where you can rest and a restaurant to buy food and drinks.

Decent Nautical Museum
The Maritime museum is located around a mile away from Amsterdam Centraal station on foot. Alternatively you can take bus 22 from Centraal to Kattenburgerplein which is a short walk from the museum. It is housed in a fine building with a courtyard in a dock area. Due to time constraints I had only an hour to look around but there was plenty of interesting content. I enjoyed the Rescuers at Sea exhibition which featured many interesting stories of volunteers working for KNRM (Dutch Lifeboat Service). There are many good nautical paintings on display covering the golden age when the Netherlands was a major seafaring force. The Food for Thought exhibition was informative and dealt with food production and waste. The Netherlands is the second largest exporter of agricultural produce (USA is the first). Unfortunately the old ships normally anchored in the dock were away for restoration so couldn’t be viewed. Overall, an enjoyable experience at a cost of €18.50.

A good insight into the VOC and all things nautical
A very large building with a stunning courtyard, very relaxed feel. Lots to see in various galleries but not overhwhelming, nicely curated exhibitions on various different aspects such as navigation history, where our food comes from, old maps, and the VOC as you'd expect. The day we arrived the large reconstructed ship was away, the steward at the desk very kindly told us BEFORE we bought our tickets, so we had the choice to return a day later and see it - really glad we did as it was quite stunning and gave you an inkling into what it might have been like as a sailor back in the day. Rather complicated lockers were the only downside!

Make time for Het Scheepvaart in Amsterdam
This is a fabulous museum, first class! The building itself is my favorite part but the exhibitions were also excellent. There was a fascinating exhibition of a Dutch solo sailor and the shop was very good. Highly recommend.

pro/con/advices- great and fun museum
PROS * A very fun place to visit * Interesting and informative- learn about Dutch history and the water: relive the era when the Netherlands was a sea-faring world leader in trade and commerce... and war * Very well designed * Nice interesting building that sits on the water * Outstanding well-designed presentations and exhibits * See other incredible ship models and very creative and imaginative historical and colorful mastheads from historical ships * Multiple themed rooms with outstanding clear presentations * Amazing displays of historical marine boating materials and artifacts * Fascinating intriguing attractive displays * The 17th century recreated anchored Dutch boat is the best- exploring it alone could take up to an hour! See how the seamen and crewmen lived and worked * Spacious clean convenient secured lockers in the basement to keep stuff CONS * The cost is 19 euros regardless of when one arrives, and no (senior) discount * It closes at 1700 hours "I VISITED THIS PLACE"... ... because it was on my short list of important interesting sites that I chose for my (way too) short (first) visit to Amsterdam. That day started with the Anne Frank House and proceeded to the Portuguese Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, passing the Dutch Resistance Museum. this incredible fantastic Dutch National Maritime Museum and then the Auschwitz Holocaust Memorial and then the Analogues concert at Carre Theater (of course all of these have already been extensively reviewed by me). I arrived at 1600h, an hour before the 1700h closure and was charged the entire 19 euros. I conveniently stored my stuff in the massive modern combo stored locker room. I raced and ran through the exhibits- as much and as many as I could. I totally enjoyed myself- it is a well-designed, pleasingly presented demonstration of a massive amount of historical Dutch history and ships. The recreated docked full-size 17th century Dutch trading ship is incredible and outstanding: I loved it. I ran through every single section of it, inside and out. The accuracy of the creation is incredible. WAS IT WORTH THE COST? For me as a solo budget traveler, it seemed expensive- even if I had arrived at 0900h. For a family with young children who would absolutely love this museum, that can add up quickly (even with children's price, which is probably less expensive. WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN? Sure- I'd love to be able to more leisurely explore the massive exhibits of information and artifacts and to explore the ship again. But at 19 euros, that's probably not going to happen for this senior budget traveler. ADVICES Definitely do go at least once- enjoy all the exhibits, especially the full-size recreated ship. FULL DISCLOSURE "I visited this place" with the intention and plan to write a thorough complete and "helpful" review and to attach and submit many "helpful" photos here on tripadvisor, so if these did "help" you, please indicate that by tikking the "thumbs up" symbol. Thanks.

An inclusive maritime history museum
This is pretty close to Amsterdam Centraal and the Resistance Museum, so it's pretty easy to get to from either of those areas. We stopped in because my partner is very interested in maritime history; this one is special because the building is beautiful; it's the former trading building. It's full of art (which I didn't quite expect), and in true Dutch fashion, it is very honest about its history. They did not hide their colonial past and included achievements from their former colonies--something other colonizers appear to be allergic to. Unlike other colonizers, they also didn't whitewash anything. There's also a segment about the various environments, which was interesting. You hear the story of shipwrecked sailors who survived against all odds in the arctic. We ended the visit with a tour of a replica VOC ship, and a quick visit of a retired royal boat. The scenery is also beautiful. If you're on the fence about this museum, you can wait until you're there to decide--unlike the Rembrandt House, Riksmuseum, Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum, this one doesn't sell out quickly. We also managed to snag a deal for it on Groupon, so definitely check there.

Great history and current exhibits
Beautiful building. Exhibits are very interesting for adults. Varied exhibits about the city as a port, its growth, past and current use, and the broader Dutch maritime history. We learned a lot. Special exhibit on whaling was great for kids to understand that history. The audio guides are free with tickets and were helpful to understand more. Cafe had some good food and wasn’t too expensive. They have a kids menu.

Lovely covered courtyard
Must confess we were pretty museum’d out by the time we visited but still enjoyed it. Entry included with our I Amsterdam card so we went. If you walk there, as you cross the bridge heading towards museum from centraal station direction, look across to the right and you can see the only windmill in Amsterdam city in the distance. The building is fabulous, make sure you go down to the bathrooms as the vaulted area down there is impressive. We didn’t look at everything. We took the audio guide on offer but found we read the info boards rather than listening to the guide. The replica sailing ship is well presented, quite tricky to move around if you’re not too mobile and as you’d expect, mind your head! Favourite museum displays were those related to navigation in a starlit section and the section on books/maps. Fascinating to see these early “travel guides” with their depictions of local scenes and people’s. Do sit in the courtyard area which is a lovely space, wait until there’s a burst of sunshine and see the effect of the roof line shadows across the walls because it’s beautiful.

Really fascinating!
Stunning museum and full of such amazing artefacts and information. My husband and I are specifically interested in boats and sea history etc which is the main reason we went here but I think it would suit anybody. Some really interesting things to look at in a very beautiful building. Really enjoyed it.

Interesting speciality museum, especially if you like the sea.
A lovely waterside location in a very impressive building. It's displays are well presented and clearly themed. An interesting range of items, both large and small, inside and out, that tell a lot about Dutch maritime history. As a family we are interested in maritime things, so we spent about five hours in it (including a drinks break) and didn't see everything. Entrance was speedy (we didn't prebook) and being offered a free locker to put bags and coats in was helpful. The one thing that's almost completely missing is anything related to the 20th Century, which is surprising given the key role that the Dutch played in salvage and oil transportation, and their brave if doomed sea battles against the Japanese in 1942.

Great experience, great presentation, not to be missed.
Great experience. I chose to start "navigating" in the museum from the East wing, next the West , leaving the ships (in the North) for last. Great concept to move in the museum with the signs of the compass! Many great concepts! From the presentation of the navigation apparatus, to the presentation of life of a ship owning Dutch family (through a "moving portrait"), and the presentation of maps of the journeys of the Doutch mariners. Not to be missed!

Ausprobieren, ausprobieren, ausprobieren

Mooie objecten in rustige goed ingerichte ruimtes. Ook voor de kinderen veel verschillend vermaak. Een aanrader!

A voir

A voir.
