The Hermitage Museum, located on the river Amstel near Waterlooplein in Amsterdam, is the largest off-site branch of the world-famous Hermitage Museum of St Petersburg. Amstelhof, the historic building in which the Hermitage Museum is housed, dates back to the year 1681 and served as a retirement home for the elderly until as recently as 2007. The museum was inaugurated by Queen Beatrix and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev in 2009, and its collection features two permanent exhibitions: Russia-Netherlands relations and the history of the Amstelhof building itself. The museum is also home to a number of temporary exhibitions, which have included the history of Alexander the Great and an exhibit of the museum’s large collection of paintings, titled Matisse to Malevich. Make your reservations now and discover it during your holidays in the Netherlands!
A look inside the Hermitage Museum
The Hermitage Museum in Russia has several international branches, but the one in Amsterdam is by far the largest. The Amstelhof building is a good example of classical architecture. It was constructed in 1681 and still preserves its original exterior, with a long brick facade extending for over 100 meters, which was the longest in the city at the time. The interior has been renovated many times throughout the years and most importantly in recent times, following a €40 million renovation project to accommodate the substantial collection. While the museum does have two permanent exhibitions, it is perhaps most famous for its outstanding temporary exhibits, which are often on loan from other institutions. The Hermitage Art Museum is one of Amsterdam’s most important museums, attracting well over 400,000 visitors each year. It is located near Waterlooplein, which is home to a famous flea market. You can reach it by public transport or by foot (just a 20-minute walk from Central Station).
