Your complete guide to the Amsterdam Icebar

Your complete guide to the Amsterdam Icebar

The warm summer days are on their way and temperatures in Amsterdam regularly reach around 30 degrees. Of course, you can take a canal cruise or relax in the Vondelpark, but sometimes you just want to cool off. And where better to do that than at the Amsterdam Icebar? Here, the temperature drops to as low as -10 degrees and you literally step into another world. It’s the perfect escape from the summer heat, although a visit to the Icebar is actually a special experience all year round. Curious to know what to expect during a visit? Keep reading to find out!

A completely new Icebar

Following an extensive renovation, the Amsterdam Icebar has been open to visitors again since 15 June. The ice interior is renewed every year to maintain the Icebar’s quality and appearance at the highest level. During the most recent renovation, not only were new ice sculptures installed, but the floor was also renewed and the sanitary ware replaced (which, by the way, is made of porcelain, not ice). In addition, the bar and the lounge ceiling were given a makeover. Curious to see what such a renovation looks like? On the Instagram account @amsterdamicebar, you can get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look.

Discover the journey of Willem Barentsz

A visit to the Amsterdam Icebar is more than just a chilly experience. It’s a journey back in time to the expeditions of the Dutch explorer Willem Barentsz. In the 16th century, Barentsz attempted to find a shorter sea route to Asia via the north-east. During his third expedition, his ship became trapped in the ice near Nova Zembla. Together with his crew, he spent almost a year there under extreme conditions. This remarkable history is the inspiration behind the Icebar. Fortunately, you won’t have to spend months in the freezing cold yourself, but you will get a sense of just how impressive such an icy environment must have been.

You’re hot, and we’re cold: cool down in the Icebar!

Is it warmer than 30 degrees outside? If so, you’ll get a 10% discount on your visit to the Amsterdam Icebar! Valid from 23 June 2026 to 5 July 2026.

The coldest bar in Amsterdam

The adventure begins in the warm bar, which is decorated in the style of a 16th-century inn. Here, you’ll get ready for the expedition and be given a warm coat and gloves. As soon as the doors to the Icebar open, you’ll immediately feel the icy air rushing out. Inside, you’ll be surrounded by impressive ice sculptures that bring Barentsz’s story to life. Among other things, you’ll find a shipwreck and various elements that refer to his famous voyage. Virtually everything is made of ice: the walls, the bar and even the glasses from which you drink.

Three drinks are included in your visit, with a choice of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. One of the most special parts of the experience is drinking from a glass made entirely of ice! After use, the ice glasses are melted down again. Take a seat at the ship’s steering wheel, take photos amongst the sculptures and enjoy the striking contrast between the summer heat outside and the temperature of -10 degrees inside.

The history of the Icebar

The Amsterdam Icebar originally opened in 2010 as a promotion for Heineken Extra Cold Beer. Since then, the attraction has grown into one of the city’s most unique experiences. Following a major renovation in 2015, the current Willem Barentsz theme was introduced, allowing visitors not only to cool off but also to experience a slice of Dutch history. Since 2018, more than a million visitors have visited the Amsterdam Icebar. And with its new interior, new ice sculptures and unique combination of history, entertainment and a chance to cool off, the Icebar remains a special destination for both tourists and locals alike.

Prepare for your Icebar visit
