The Museums

The museums on the island together house the biggest collection of historical artefacts. Built on the site of Berlin’s founding, the first museum, the Altes Museum, was built in 1833, with more museums following after. They were meant to house the German state’s enormous collection of historical objects and make them accessible to the public, and more museums were added over time. Now it’s a large cultural ground with six museums, a park and a cathedral, and a must-visit for history lovers visiting Berlin.

The Altes Museum is home to many objects from ancient Greece and the Roman empire, and is one of the most stunning earlier museum buildings in Berlin. Next to it you can find the Neues Museum you can find the famous bust of Nefertiti, and plenty of other artefacts from ancient Egypt. And at Pergamonmuseum. The Panorama you can virtually experience the beautiful Pergamon Altar as it was in Ancient Greece. The actual Pergamonmuseum is still closed for renovation, but at the panorama you can still experience its majestic masterpiece.

A little less ancient artworks can be found at the Bode Museum, focused on art from the middle ages up to the 18th century. Explore this beautiful museum especially designed and curated to display these works at their best. And at the Alte Nationalgalerie the journey continues, from the 18th century up to the realism of the late 19th century, in another majestic building, opened in 1867.
