About

The perfect mix of nature and culture

Combine a day at ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo, the oldest zoo of the Netherlands, with a visit of Micropia, the world’s first and only museum about microbes. ARTIS, as the zoo is locally referred to, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Amsterdam. The zoo was founded in 1838 and is home to thousands of animals and over 700 trees and plant types from all around the world.

Enjoy a relaxing day at the zoo, away from the hustle and bustle of the Dutch capital. Pay a visit to the giraffes and zebras in the Savanna, see the new lion enclosure that opened in 2023, marvel at the strength of elephants and the agility of jaguars or visit the enchanting butterfly pavilion. Be amazed by the many species living side by side in the Forest House and Bird House.

Learn more about the animals’ natural living environments and the zoo’s efforts to preserve endangered species and biodiversity. Furthermore, the zoo includes a fascinating planetarium where you are escorted on an adventure in space. Travel across the stars, moons, planets and even entire galaxies faster than the speed of light.

More than meets the eye

You can’t see them yet trillions of them are all around and on us: microbes. Around two-thirds of life on earth consists of microorganism that you cannot see without a microscope. Micropia is the world’s first museum completely dedicated to microbes and is an unforgettable experience for adults and children alike. Micropia was founded in 2014 and reveals a whole new world to its visitors.

Microbes are all around us and an integral part of life; they are the smallest yet most powerful lifeforms on earth. More than 700 species of bacteria live in your mouth alone, time to step into the Kiss-O-Meter to find out what happens to them when you kiss someone. Every day at 13.00 and 16.00, the Micropia laboratory technicians share interesting microbe facts in the museum and answer all your questions

Micropia is a high-tech and immersive multimedia experience that will let you enter the realm of what’s usually hidden from our eyes. Modern microscopes, interactive displays and state-of-the-art equipment bring the world of our powerful little neighbours to life, making the award winning exhibitions an unforgettable experience for the whole family!
