About

Iconic Dutch sights

If you ask anybody what pops into their mind when they think of the Netherlands, most people will say windmills, tulip fields and the lively centre of Amsterdam. Its picturesque canals, historic buildings, exotic nightlife, and open-minded culture stand out. And while Amsterdam is undeniably one of the country’s most fascinating tourist destinations, the scenic Dutch countryside and windmills in the surrounding area are often overlooked.

Fortunately, you can leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind for a while with this phenomenal tour through the countryside surrounding the city, featuring traditional windmills and fishing villages. Peace and quiet are just a thirty-minute drive from Amsterdam. There, you can enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings and immerse yourself in the traditional way of life whilst admiring the colourful windmills.

An open-air museum

Once you leave the capital, you enter a different world. Most of the small towns around Amsterdam resemble open-air museums; some actually are. The Countryside & Windmills Tour takes you from Amsterdam to the villages of Zaanse Schans, Volendam and the former island of Marken; the order of the tour is subject to change.

A visit to Zaanse Schans is an opportunity to admire the historic windmills. More than ten windmills stand along the banks of the River Zaan, and the surrounding area is freely accessible. A visit to the windmills is included in the All-in tour.

Volendam is a typical Dutch fishing village, and a stroll along De Dijk and through the harbour area will not disappoint. Here, you’ll visit the Cheese Factory to sample delicious cheese and, if time permits, learn how it’s made. If you’re staying in Volendam for lunch, we recommend the freshly caught fish.

The third location you’ll visit during the tour is the village of Marken, a former island in the Markermeer, now a peninsula. On both the Classic tour and the All-in tour, you’ll enjoy a unique 30-minute boat trip between the picturesque villages of Volendam and Marken. This boat trip is only available with this tour operator. You’ll sail past the beautiful villages of Monnickendam and Katwoude.

When walking amongst the houses in Marken, be careful to stay on the path, as before you know it you’ll find yourself in someone’s garden. A visit to a traditional clog-making workshop rounds off our tour. Here, clogs are still made according to a 100-year-old tradition using steam-powered machines. They’re surprisingly comfortable, as you’ll be able to try for yourself.

An unforgettable experience

During this Amsterdam day trip you will discover a world unlike any other, an experience that is sure to be cherished by adults and kids alike. Take a break from the commotion of the city and unwind as you visit one of the Netherlands’ best-kept secrets.

The Dutch countryside is ready to welcome you and introduce you to a completely different side of the Netherlands from the bustling capital. You can buy your ticket here for a fun-filled adventure in the countryside amongst the windmills.
