The guide will take you to two of the best museums in Berlin: the Pergamonmuseum and the Neues Museum.
Over the course of three hours, the guide will show you the top sights and give you insights you won’t learn on your own. Your tour group will exist of at most 10 people, so you can be sure to have enough one on one time with the guide. You will go on a journey through history and hear all about how the collections relate to Berlin both in the past and in the present.
Pergamon Museum
The Pergamonmuseum is home to the Ishtar Gate, one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The institution is devoted to the ancient world, with a collection of classical antiquities, a collection dedicated to the ancient near east, and a collection of Islamic art. This is the must-visit institution in Berlin as it is the most visited museum in all of Germany.
The three collections are divided over the building’s three wings. Along with the famous Ishtar Gate, the Pergamon is home to several other treasures from ancient times. There are the frieze panels of the Pergamon Alter excavated between 1878 and 1886, which are now part of an impressive reconstruction of the entire alter, as well as reconstructions of the Processional Way and the Market Gate of Miletus.
Neues Museum
While the Neues Museum first opened its doors in 1855, it was heavily bombed during World War II. It wasn’t until 2009 when this institution could finally reopen its doors to the public. Inside there are exhibitions on display from three different collections belonging to the National Museums in Berlin.
There are Egyptian art, prehistoric objects, and classical antiquities. Amongst the most famous pieces are the bust of Nefertiti, the head of Tiye, precious silver vessels from Priam’s Treasure, and a 700,000 year-old axe head from the Stone Age. Together the exhibitions give you the opportunity to see how prehistoric and protohistoric cultures developed.
Museum Island Day Pass
After the tour, you can explore the other 3 institutions on the island on your own. The Bode Museum showcases an impressive collection of sculptures, Byzantine art, and medieval treasures, inviting visitors to marvel at the masterful craftsmanship. The Altes Museum focuses on classical antiquities, housing an array of ancient Greek and Roman artifacts that paint a vivid picture of ancient civilizations.
Meanwhile, the Alte Nationalgalerie stands as a testament to neoclassical architecture and boasts a diverse range of 19th-century paintings and sculptures, including works by Caspar David Friedrich and Auguste Rodin. Each institution offers a unique experience, blending art and history to transport visitors to different periods of human creativity and expression. You can easily spend the entire day on this island in the Spree exploring culture and history.
