The DDR museum has the largest exhibition of the German Democratic Republic (GDR, or in German DDR) in Berlin. Through an innovative and interactive exhibition design, the museum invites visitors to expand their knowledge and experience history up close. The idea is to be there with all your senses and gain experience in the process in a fun way, which is suitable and interesting for all age groups.
The exhibits displayed in the museum are not locked away in cabinets as usual, but are instead ready to be fully appreciated and deliver a tangible experience through history. You can open drawers, cabinets, turn on the television and explore many more things in an authentically furnished and decorated DDR flat. Participate in an exciting interactive journey through the pre-built districts that are accompanied by the Trabant noises.

Hop On Berlin
A great way to see all the sights of Berlin, the tour is nearly 3 hours long in one lap. There is an audio guide in several languages. You do get really close to all of the attractions. The bus driver was friendly and welcoming.

Great service, friendly staff and great views! Would recommend the Hop on Hop off bus as a great way to see Berlin. Be prepared though, the entire route is @2.5 hours long!

Brilliant.
Okay … I have just read the recent reviews and it would seem some individual(s) rated the Sight Seeing of Berlin (Hop On, Hop Off) as not particularly great. However, I have found my tour brilliant. Whilst the tour bus, was not particularly crowded. Claudes, the bus/tour guide, was exceptionally brilliant, so knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour. Appreciated his storytelling of why the Berlin Wall was built,; explained the Berlin Wall Museum and the drawings etc … we stopped twice for a 15 minute break. Claudes, spoke about the history of Berlin and it’s check points. It’s a shame, you can’t ask for Claudes, for your tour guide … he was & is brilliant 😊

Excellent tour guide
We purchased a ticket that gave us a 48 hour pass with guided walking tour and free curry wurst. The directions to activate your ticket were not great, nor was information on redeeming your curry wurst. However the actual tour bus was great. The first driver we had was entirely unhelpful but the other ones were excellent. Also the sellers and agents around the mail stops were super helpful. The English guy we had for the walking tour was hilarious and very knowledgeable. He really did an excellent job.

a good way to see Berlin
I would have been unable to experience visiting all of these sights without using this bus service......and just like in London, another bus will soon arrive, after you visit a given stop.

Great tour and relaxing. Easy on and off👍
The bus ride was a great way to see the city and listen to someone tell us about all the highlights of what we were seeing. Super easy to hop on and off. The boat tour was nice but we didn’t understand anything said since it wasn’t in English…but it was still a nice ride.

A good overview of Berlin
Read a few poor reviews but have to say ours was a good experience. Talked to a few of the ticket sellers as they lower their prices as you move around. We were happy with the price we paid. We enjoyed the banter on the commentary and have little to complain about. This company pairs up with another so there's more choice of buses at each stop. There is a negative in that there are no *bus stops* so you have to remember where you got off. We bought tickets and boarded where there were ticket sellers. That helped, but they're not at every stop. One other gripe was other tourists chatting loudly so we couldn't hear the commentary. Overall, a great way to see the highlights of Berlin.

Handy tour bus quite frequent
Tour bus handy - right outside our hotel at East Side Gallery stop! Bought 2 day ticket for extra 4 euros which was worth it. They let you use red hop on and hop off bus as well as the red city sightseeing bus so both were quite frequent. Did full tour took 2 hours but bus does stop as major sights for 15 mins during that time ie Brandenburg gate and also at stop 1. Detailed recorded tour although sometimes it continues even when you are at red lights so unsure what its referring too but still informative. There was a boat ride but we couldnt find where to pick this up from so ended up doing a separate boat tour on Reederei Hadynski which was very good. Bus was clean and soft drinks available but you need cash as card machine didnt work.

A great way to see central Berlin
I traveled to Berlin for a day trip with my son and therefore needed the ability to see as many of the sights in a short space of time and this tour ticked the box. We booked the combined tour and one hour river trip in advance and when we got to the central station it was really easy to find the bus stop, number 19 on the list. As one can imagine the bus was quite full but we managed to get upstairs seats and had great 360 views. A downside, not worth marking down was that the initial Jack for the headphones was as faulty but the next one did. The circular tour takes 2.5 hours if one stays on but the clue is in the name so we hopped off for the river cruise before getting back on at a different stop to get back to the station. The guided information adds humour to interesting facts. Well worth using to understand Berlin

A great way to see the sights over two days - the 2 day ticket is good value. One downside - the really cheesy audio track. Very informative, though.

Fahrt mit Klaus - absolute Empfehlung!
Ich selbst habe einige Jahre in Berlin gewohnt und habe noch Verwandtschaft dort. Wenn ich nun zu Besuch in Berlin bin und Rundfahrten buche, wähle ich City Sightseeing Berlin quasi aus Gewohnheit. Dieses Mal jedoch bin ich so dermaßen überzeugt, dass ich sogar eine Bewertung schreibe. Das liegt an Klaus. Klaus ist der Busfahrer, der uns an unserem zweiten Tag durch Berlin begleitete. Wir hatten das 48-Stunden Ticket gebucht, da wir damit rechneten, dass am 03.10. bestimmt einige Demos und Kundgebungen unsere Rundfahrt "stören" würden (was dann ja auch so war). Wir stiegen zu Klaus in den Bus und bekamen eine very special Rundfahrt. Das Wetter war kühl und windig, so dass das Dach eh geschlossen war. Also blieben wir im unteren Bereich. Klaus ist das komplette Gegenteil vom kaltschnäuzigen Berliner. Er begrüßte jeden neuen Fahrgast sehr persönlich (obwohl er die Menschen ja noch gar nicht kannte!) und souverän in diversen Sprachen. Jeder fühlte sich willkommen. Falls jemand filmbegeistert ist: wartet auf Klaus. Er weiß genau, welche Filme wo in Berlin gedreht wurden (aktuell: Tribute von Panem). Wir haben auf dieser Tour so viel mitbekommen, was nicht in den Kopfhörer-Ansagen erwähnt wurde! Meine (19jährige) Tochter hat angekündigt, dass sie auf ihrer nächsten Berlin-Reise nur noch mit Klaus fahren möchte. Wir haben tatsächlich einige Stopps, an denen wir eigentlich aussteigen wollten, ausgelassen, um weiter mit Klaus zu fahren (und haben sie dann später erlaufen). Achtet darauf, in welchen Bus Ihr einsteigt: die Hör-Texte des Kooperationspartners sind zwar natürlich ebenfalls informativ, aber sehr nüchtern und unpersönlich. Vielleicht kann man das mal anpassen? Wir stiegen um 17h in einen Bus am KaDeWe ein, dessen Fahrer uns dann mitteilte, dass er nur noch bis zum Potsdamer Platz führe (zwei Stationen). Bisschen irreführend, wenn es heißt, dass der nächste Bus um 17h kommt - wir waren davon ausgegangen, dass der Bus dann dann noch einmal die komplette Runde fahren würde. Zumal andere Unternehmer offenbar länger unterwegs waren (wir haben die Busse der Konkurrenz deutlich später noch gesehen). Trotzdem und ganz deutlich: absolute Empfehlung für die Tour mit Klaus. Für den Kooperationspartner spreche ich ganz deutlich keine Empfehlung aus. Es kam kein Hinweis, dass die gebuchte Strecke gesperrt war und ein Hinweis auf möglicherweise auf möglicherwiese veränderte Routen fehlte ebenfalls. Auf einem Teilstück waren auch die Kopfhörerbuchsen offenbar kaputt. Auf unseren Hinweis erhielten wir vom Fahrer (nicht Klaus!) ein eher unfreundliches: "Det passiert". Klaus ist für uns ein absolutes Argument für diese Tour mit diesem Unternehmen. Ich weiß jetzt, warum es in Berlin überall diese überirdischen Rohre gibt (die ich bisher für misslungene Kunstinstallationen gehalten habe) und ich weiß, wo es den Schacht gibt, der der Stasi damals die Spionage des Alex ermöglichte. Und: Klaus, falls du das liest: natürlich waren wir noch in den Hackeschen Höfen! Liebe Grüße von Natalie (die mit dem interessanten Pulli) und der Mutter!

Absolut empfehlenswert
Von Herzen ein grosses Dankeschön für diese Möglichkeit. Meine Schwiegermutter (85) war fasziniert von der Stadt und kaum aus dem Staunen nicht mehr heraus, wie gross Berlin doch ist. Für eine 85jährige ein absolutes Highlight, da sie nichts erlaufen musste und die Stadt sitzend geniessen konnte. Die Streckenführung war super. Die Stopps in der Stadt gut gewählöt und zentral. Die Häufigkeit der Busfrequenz war sehr praktisch und mit max 20min hat man stets Zeit, sich kurz die Beine zu vertreten und/oder ein Getränk zu kaufen. Der Bus war super sauber, das Personal professionell und super freundlich. Der Service während der Fahrt informativ und excellent. Unser Platz oben und in der Sonne war perfekt. Eine absolute Empfehlung!

Preis-Leistung ok.
Wir haben die negativen Bewertungen gelesen und können sie in keinster Weise nachvollziehen. Der Fahrer war nett und freundlich, konnte auch Fragen beantworten. Für die mangelnden Sehenswürdigkeiten in Kiel kann der Fahrer sicht nichts, im Gegenteil. Er hat versucht alles positiv zu erzählen.

Smaller than I expected bit with tons of information
I always wanted to visit this Museum so it was the first places I went after I arrived. It was a lot smaller than I expected but nevertheless very informative and easy to follow. It basically follows the history of the formation and eventual collapse of the DDR with a lot of detail as to what life was like during those times. Having visited similar museums in other Eastern European countries not a lot of it came as a surprise. but each country is of course unique and has their own history and they all suffered equally. You can only begin to imagine the level of fear and suppression that they lived under, knowing that things could and should be different but feeling and indeed being powerless and too afraid to even try and change things. Its quite sobering really and a real eye opener.

Excellent interractive museum experience. Try and avoid at busy times if you can.
This is likely one of many museums in Berlin focusing on the cold war. There is quite an emphasis here on what it was like to live through the period of history, as opposed to focus on the politics and personalities that led to the cold war and its impact on Berlin in particular. There is a 'model' of a german flat as it would have been during the 60s that you can walk around. Overall this was very good. There is an admission price of 14(?) euros which seemed reasonable to me by the time I had finished. There is a lot of information to get through. My one recommendation would be to try and visit when there are few visitors. The surface area covered by the museum isnt that big and if it is busy this can more difficult to get around easily.

Gives an insight into life as an East German post WW2
I visited here with my wife for the afternoon. It's situated next to the cathedral by Museum Island, just down a flight of stairs. Inside you get a real feel of what it was like to live as an East German under Russian control. Every part of your life was scrutinised and if you belonged to the party ups received lots of benefits. However, if you didn't belong you had to drive a Trabant or a Wartburg which took many years to deliver and didn't improve in over 30 years. Really interesting to find out what it was like to live as a German under Russian control and not knowing who was spying on who. The sad reality is that it's not surprising so may people tried to escape after the war.

Spectacular place
Outstanding museum. With that being said, if you don’t know what GDR/DDR/FRG mean, you might not enjoy the place to the fullest. I was born and raised in the Soviet Union, so, for me this museum was like a trip down the memory lane. Back to my childhood. So many objects that we owned, that we used in every day life, realities from back in the days. I absolutely enjoyed it. My American husband didn’t quite get the whole buzz. So, unless you lived through the Cold War period, you might not find this museum too interesting. It’s located right across Berlin Dome, so you can visit 2 locations in one set

Interactive, interesting
The museum has recently been renoved and expanded. I very much enjoyed the interactive nature of the museum, in particular the DDR - furnished apartment you could visit. We spent great 90 minutes here, my kids liked it too.

Interesting, interactive and a little bit unusual
This museum provides a surprisingly interactive look at life on the other side of the wall. There’s plenty of interesting exhibits crammed in so it’s definitely worth spending a few hours here. We thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very educational.

Life in East Germany, interesting and informative......
A really interesting museum covering life in East Berlin and a world of 40+ years ago. Quite enjoyable and well worth a visit if you have time. Use of Berlin card to reduce cost was also helpful.

Interesting and interactive learning experience.
Real interesting and loved the interactive. Learnt a lot about life in the DDR and wished I’d had long to look around. Didn’t manage to read everything, but that was mainly because I am learning German, so I tested myself by reading the German sections. Would definitely recommend a visit, it’s a nice spot down by the river, with a great view of the Berlin Dom as you come out the main doors.

Small fact filled museum.
Enjoyable fact filled small museum about life in the DDR. Located not far from Alexander Platz, easily completed in 1.5 hrs. Fun room reconstructions from the 1970s. Different to the Stasi Museum and easier for children to engage with.

A glimpse into the recent past
This well-organized, compact museum may be more interesting for younger Germans looking to get an idea of how their grandparents and parents lived, but I found it interesting as an American as well. The recreation of the ideal socialist apartment reminded me of seeing models of homes in the US from the 50s, 60s and 70s. The exhibits are well-presented with lots of interactivity, and the descriptions are are quick to read. I'd include this spot with a tour of the German Espionage Museum, as well as a guided tour of the wall sights.

Lots to explore but go out of school hours!
This is a fun museum with loads of information and great interaction. I would agree it can be packed with school kids so if I went again I would go later in the day to avoid the kids. There was so much to see that you had to keep track of which bits you had done. Spent around an hour there. Worth a visit and can get a discount with the Berlin welcome card.

Leggendo anche altre recensioni devo dire sono d'accordo. 13 euro per questo museo forse sono un pò troppi, spendendone 6 mi sembra con lo sconto studenti però è ok. Il museo è carino e ci sono tante trovate interattive molto particolari (ascensore, auto...). Unico neo è la grandezza del posto che quindi con l'afflusso alto di persone ti ritrovi un pò stretto e leggi male tutte le informazioni a giro

Ein sehr interessantes und sehenswertes DDR-Museum - Ein Highlight!
Das DDR Museum ist ein privat geführtes Museum und beschäftigt sich mit dem damaligen Leben in der DDR unter Erich Honecker. Der Besucher bekommt zunächst Infos über den Mauerbau und die Grenzanlagen - anschaulich dargestellt durch verschiedene Modellnachbauten. Außerdem kann man durch eine komplett eingerichtete DDR-Wohnung gehen. Sehr interessant war auch ein in einem echten Trabbi eingebauter Fahr-Simulator. Zu sehen bekam der Besucher auch Besteck und Geschirr aus der DDR-Küche sowie verschiedene Lebensmittel. Verschiedene technische Geräte wie z. B. ein Fernseher oder Radio waren auch zu begutachten. Ein Spionage-Abhörzimmer durfte in diesem Museum auch nicht fehlen. Man kann in diesem Museum auch alles anfassen und ausprobieren - echt super!! Da dieses Museum privat geführt wird, war auch ein Eintrittsgeld zu entrichten. Bei Vorlage meines Schwerbehindertenausweises gab es auch einen Preisnachlaß. Kreditkartenzahlung war auch möglich. Das Museum kann auch mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln erreicht werden. Ein sehr interessantes und sehenswertes Museum.

Intéressant, riche documentation, belle reconstitution, attention au monde
Musée très riche mais avec vraiment beaucoup d'objets et d'explications qu'il faut souvent découvrir en ouvrant des tiroirs, des portes. C'est original de ne pas avoir de grands panneaux didactiques trop "plan-plan" mais cela manque un peu de clarté à mon goût tellement c'est foisonnant. C'est en tout cas un musée que nous ne regrettons pas d'avoir visité (inclus dans notre pass transport+musée all inclusive) car c'est une occasion unique de découvrir des objets du quotidien. La reconstitution d'un appartement est une super idée, fidèle à ce que cela devait être. Sympa d'essayer virtuellement des vêtements de l'époque et de s'asseoir dans le canapé du salon en regardant une émission de variété ! Beaucoup de monde le jour où nous y sommes allées, ce qui ne permet pas de profiter tranquillement et dans le calme (la Trabant dans laquelle on peut s'installer était littéralement squattée par un seul enfant sans que ses parents ne lui demandent de laisser sa place à d'autres).

Museo interattivo di facile fruizione
Museo piccolo ma ricco di oggetti, immagini, esperienze alla portata di tutti per avere un'idea di come fosse la vita nella DDR, come vivessero da separati i berlinesi ed il passaggio alla Germania unita. Vale qualche ora, soprattutto se si hanno figli che non sanno nulla di questo

Uno sguardo a Est
Il museo è veramente bello e consente di approcciare in modo originale e interattivo tutti gli aspetti della vita politica e sociale della ex DDR e, cosa ancora più interessante, esplorare la quotidianità di un abitante della Germania Est a partire dalla propria casa di abitazione. Se proprio devo avanzare un appunto è sugli spazi che, considerato il massiccio afflusso di visitatori, appaiono ristretti.

Super interactief
Erg leuk museum met heel veel informatie, vooral over het dagelijkse leven in de DDR (objecten in kastjes). De kastjes kan je open trekken, er zijn zelfs spelletjes en films die je kan bekijken, en er is een heel ddr flat nagebouwd. Leuk voor elke doelgroep dus. Dit is minder een professioneel en puur informatief museum maar dat is ook wel eens leuk voor de afwisseling. Er is een thema voor ieder (sport, dagelijks leven, eten). Wel beetje krappe ruimtes , maar erg de moeite waard !

Intressant museum
Kul och intressant museum om man är historieintresserad. Mycket att läsa i många skåp och luckor, vilket gjorde att vi inte orkade läsa allt. Det var för mycket text för att orka läsa helt enkelt. Gillade att man kunde gå in en lägenhet, kan säkert läggas till en affär eller liknande som ersätter en del skyltar. Det var mycket folk när vi var där. Hade varit bra om man fått förbeställt biljetter och man släppt in ett visst antal personer varje timme.

Een interessant bezoek
Wij vonden dat we aan de vroege kant waren 10.30 uur maar het was al redelijk druk. In het museum niet overal bijgewerkt in verband met drukte. Leuk is dat het interactief is en dat je veel kon proberen. Interessant om te zien hoe het leven in het DDR -tijdperk is geweest.

Excelente museo
Visita realizada en Noviembre de 2019. Un excelente museo sobre la vida en la RDA, los coche, la vida cotidiana, la cultura, los telediarios y versiones de las casas típicas del Berlín del Este. Aunque es un poco caro, merece mucho la pena, está muy bien para comprender el pasado de la ciudad y te lo pasas bien, te puedes allí unas cuantas horas.

Lärorikt och kul!
Väldigt intressant museum om DDRs historia. Man fick läsa om olika aspekter av DDR genom att öppna skåp och lådor, vilket våra barn tyckte var kul. Det fanns även en hel lägenhet uppbyggd, vilket var häftigt. Intressant och lärorikt!

Snyggt och lättnavigerat museum
Intressant museum som på ett inspirerande sätt ger en bild av DDR. Dock var mycket skriven information inne i skåp och lådor som skulle öppnas, vilket känns onödigt ofräscht. Det tar runt en timme att ta sig igenom om man är hyfsat intresserad. Snyggt upplägg med en lägenhet i DDR-stil.
