Crossing the lake

During a visit to Volendam and/or Marken, crossing the lake is a must-do activity. With an enjoyable boat trip with the Volendam-Marken Express, you have the opportunity to visit two unique villages in one day.

During the 30 minute boat trip, you can enjoy amazing views across the water, of the old sailboats and authentic harbours. The comfortable, heated boats are equipped with a restroom, bar and panorama deck. As you enjoy the crossing, you will get a lot of information about Volendam and Marken and their differences.

Two unique fishing villages

You will be surprised by how different Volendam and Marken are, considering that they are only a few kilometres apart. The houses are different, the people are different and even their religions are different, for ‘Volendammers’ are Catholic and ‘Markers’ are Protestant.

As soon as you arrive in the beautiful, fishing village of Volendam, you feel its unique ambiance. It is a village full of hard working, family oriented people who form a close knit community. The people are proud of their village, which has a rich history always connected to the water beyond the shore line. The people are also very hospitable, as you will see when you visit Volendam.

Marken was once an island, surrounded by the Gouwzee on one side and the Markermeer on the other. In 1957, the island was connected to the mainland by a dike, making it a peninsula. The locals took to fishing far later than their neighbours in Volendam as the island was frequently flooded before the Afsluitdijk was build, which made the soil on the island very fertile and meant the people could live off the land for a long time.
