Molto bello
Zoo di grandi dimensioni. Tante specie animali in grandi spazi.

Zoo in centro e grande
Bellissimo zoo, grande e abbastanza in centro.
Uno zoo come tanti altri
Lovely zoo
We visited here on a warm day in Amsterdam and had a great time. Took us 3 hours to walk around, very reasonable priced entry and lots of animals to see! Staff were lovely too and it wasn’t too busy. Personally I’d skip the aquarium as it wasn’t very good and not many animals to see, but overall was a great day out in Amsterdam.
The zoo is well worth your time.. see it all in about 4 hours!
Artis Zoo in the heart of Amsterdam is a very nice zoo that has gone through some major upgrades in recent years. The lions now have much more space than before, the lemurs enjoy their own island, and the elephants, especially the two new babies have completely stole my heart. For a city zoo, it is a wonderful place to see and learn about a wide variety of animals. It offers a great experience for visitors of all ages and is well worth a visit.
Great day out
Excellent zoo, lots of space for the animals. Really nice day out.
Nieuw aquarium.
Nieuwe aquarium in Artis is prachtig geworden.
Ons laatste bezoek was jaren geleden.
Artis Zoo
I had an Iamamsterdam card and entrance was included with this. The entry fee is 29.50 and I am going to base my review on this. I liked the zoo. One small gripe was that if you did pay 30 euro to get in, they should not charge you another 2 euro for a map. Anyway, this is a green island located in the centre of a concrete city. There are lots of trees/foilage and its almost like a mini-forest aswell. My favourite spots were the Japanese Garden and the Butterfly Kingdom. I got lucky and happened to walk past the lion enclosure just as the Lion was being fed. It is at 2.15pm but only on certain days. The speed of the Lion moving towards the meat has to be seen to be believed. I had hoped to see the newly opened Aquarium but it was a few days before the official opening and was for members only on the day I was there. I went into the Planetarium to view a film, which was in Dutch but they have headphones with English translation. All in all, its a bit pricey but, ya maybe, worth the admission price. The Artis tram stop is just beside the Zoo.
Must Visit Zoo in europe
I do not think there could be a more picturesque zoo in europe. The maintenance and flora fauna are impeccable and i have been able to capture beautiful photos os not only the lovely animals but of the typical dutch architecture. The staff is helpful and friendly. The animals are endearing and the zoo offers a wide variety.
Leuk
Well worth a visit, better than we expected.
We really enjoyed this zoo. It has a nice relaxed atmosphere, and the outdoor enclosures were well planned. First time we’ve seen Gorillas, and it wasn’t even misty. Food options are a bit limited, would recommend a picnic, plenty of places just to sit and enjoy. The Planetarium is O.K. But probably wouldn’t wait for more than 20 minutes. We spent a good 4 hours here, it could have been longer. 1 of the highlights of our trip.
Lovely Zoo
Lovely zoo with really good enclosures. Really good selection of animals to see. Really well laid out.
Absolutely fantastic
Absolutely amazing day and fantastic zoo!!! We normally hate zoos as the animals feel very cramp and it saddens me! However, this zoo has amazing enclosures that are open and plenty of room for all the animals. We loved the set up of all the enclosures and making the most of the space and opening up enclosure with underground tunnels or over head tunnels to give the animals further areas to explore. You really get up close to all the animals whilst ensure both the animals and visitors are safe! The zoo is extremely clean, had a sense of calm and staff who are friendly and constantly around in all areas. Visiting the zoo was the highlight of our 2 week holiday traveling! To top it off seeing the bay elephants was an amazing experience. This zoo has absolutely everything you could want to see and experience from an animal experience and family day out.
Fabulous
Fabulous experience from the start to the end. Very well organised and a lot of thought put into every single area. Make sure you reserve a whole day to visit.
A Notch Above other Zoos
This may be the best zoo I ever visited. This is more like an oases in the city of Amsterdam where many birds fly freely around the zoo. There are many ponds for the birds. There is the usual trove of animals found in many zoos. There is a cool Micropia museum next door to the zoo.
Artis maart 2026
Worth a visit
We really enjoyed our morning here. As people have mentioned the enclosures did face lots of trees/foliage so it was difficult to spot some of the animals but I think overall this is better for the animal rather than being in an empty space. We just tried at a different time and managed to see most of them. The baby elephant was amazing too see and the keepers were very friendly and informative when asked questions. There was some renovations going on but this did be not affect our day. The reason I have deducted one star is because of the gorilla enclosure. All of the other animals seemed happy and enclosures were appropriate as possible however the gorillas looked bored and disinterested. The roasting room to see them behind the glass absolutely stinks. I apologise if this is only a temporary enclosure and if they were inside due to the weather but I hope this is not their long term home. Overall we really enjoyed our visit and would recommend for a half day trip if looking for something to do while in Amsterdam
My visit to this zoo was very super! I would like to visit this zoo in summer
I was excited! I saw many animals, many beautiful birds! I liked how the exhibits were arranged! I saw lions! It was my dream to see lions!
Mooie goed bereikbare stadszoo
Great fun!
This zoo is really well maintained and the animals are genuinely really well cared for. My Partner and I loved walking around seeing all of the animals and really enjoyed how up close we could get to them!
Great time
Absolutely amazing! Friendly staff, great environment, and very beautiful set up. Animals were active and the day stayed clear to enjoy it
An excellent zoo!
ARTIS zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world and one of the prime attractions in Amsterdam if you're interested in nature. Visitors to the zoo will be impressed by the variety of animals living here, which includes elephants, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, and tortoises. Other animals that you can encounter here are lemurs, flamingos, penguins, and mountain goats. I am not exactly a great fan of zoos, but the friend I visited ARTIS with used to volunteer here and she assured me that the animals are very well taken care of. Therefore, if you have any general concerns about animals being kept in captivity, you can visit this zoo without any worries about the treatment of the animals that live here. ARTIS Zoo is not exactly cheap at €29.50 for a standard ticket, but you can enter for free if you've got the I amsterdam card. If you're keen to visit the nearby Artis Micropia and/or the Artis Groote (Big) Museum too, but you're not entitled to free entry, you can buy a combined ticket for two or more Artis sites, which will get you a discount. I would say that you can easily spend at least an hour and a half in the zoo, so make sure you give yourself enough time to fully enjoy it.
Not only for kids!
Very nice Zoo with many kind of animals. We spend around 3 hours but if we want to see all animals then for sure you need more than 5 hours. Actually is a good place for families with kids to spend a whole morning or an afternoon enjoying the animals. There are also 3-4 places within the Zoo that you can enjoy your coffee or snacks (or even light meals). Only negative is that you need to pay additional Euro 2 for the map of the zoo, this is something that I saw first time in any Zoo!
A good day out
We were pleasantly surprised by Artis, there is so much to do and see and it is easy to spend a good 4 or 5 hours just ambling. They are doing a lot of modernising at the zoo and the new parts are excellent. The elephant enclosure is huge and the animals looked very healthy and happy. As you move through the zoo the older parts do seem to be in need of some work and some of the more negative reviews make sesne, but I am guessing the modernising of these areas will all be scheduled in. There is a nice restaurant and several cafe bars amd toilets around the place. If you are looking for something different to kill a few hours, then I recommend Artis Zoo.
Great value for money!
The Zoo takes about 2 hours to get round and see everything and there is lots to see! Plenty of seating areas for a picnic and wasn’t overcrowded. Good value for money and a nice day out!
Great in the morning
Comes free with “I am Amsterdam” pass. One of the few places open at 9am. Lots of animals to see and a planetarium. Worth a few hours visit.
Good zoo, good size
Lovely time at the zoo. Perfect size. Spent about 2.5 hours here (without stopping for food). They charge for maps so take a pic or download the app. Some animals were no where to be seen, but that didn’t effect the experience. Lovely zoo
Top notch zoo
Probably one of the nicest zoo’s in the world. Very clean and the animals all have lots of room and look healthy. The viewing of the animals is top notch and they have multiple areas where you can see the animals without bars in the way. Definitely spring for the extra museums that are offered here they are very interesting.
Go see the penguins 🐧
It's one of my favourite zoos in Europe. i love getting lost here, and seeing all the animals, they also seem all super happy, too
Impressed by zoo, Awed by butterflies
Great zoo, quite a bit is ‘under construction’. Maps are not the best and it could use more direction signs. However, it is very open and somehow you feel close to the animals as you are watching them. The wolves were howling and leopard and panther were adorable. Highlight for us was butterfly exhibit. Most incredible we have ever seen.
A beautiful zoo in Amsterdam , NL
We visited this beautiful zoo with , lush gardens and elegant sculptures . The animals were healthy looking and the zoo did not smell foul. We saw giraffes, elephants taking a swim, African penguins , Oryx , otters , herons , griffon Vultures . I didn’t realize that there was a clean , vibrant zoo located in the middle of the city . Our pictures were taken by the roaming Artis staff and we were able to retrieve our family pictures by the kiosk inside the Planetarium .
prachtig
zaterdag 28 juni weer in Artis geweest.
Lovely zoo!
Really enjoyed my day at the zoo. The weather was showery but there were lots of exhibits under cover and I was delighted to see species I’d never seen before, such as the walk through Inca Tern exhibit. What a treat! There was a nice cafe, bathrooms and a gift shop.
Loved walking through the bird houses
Brilliant zoo! Big bird walk throughs and butterfly house. Quite large enclosures and information boards explaining improvements such as making the lion enclosure 10x bigger than it was, the elephants have a pool large/ deep enough for them to swim. Wouldn't have gone if we didn't have the i-amsterdam card to make the tram there and entrance "free" but glad we did.
Enjoyable zoo, especially for children
Impressive zoo, was a trip highlight for both of our children! It's a good size to explore for a few hours, with plenty to entertain all ages. Also, the landscaping was beautiful and rivaled some of the landscape at Keukenhof!
Absolutely amazing
Here on holiday with the family and decided to visit the zoo after it was recommended to me by a couple of my uni tutors. ARTIS is probably the best zoo I’ve ever been to. It feels like you are a part of the animals’ world as their enclosures are so well done and natural. The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable on the animals they are talking about.
Really nice zoo
Really nice zoo , very clean and there’s sea lot of animals that I really like like the sea lines , chimps and the gorillas . Altogether it was a really nice experience.
Impressive zoo with ongoing maintenance. Excellent to see
Expect a good 2 to 3 hours of walking. And that's with the aquarium closed. Massive complex that has renovations ongoing all over. Big open spaces, non cramped habitats for the animals. Did a good deed and handed in a dropped bank card and other things to reception yesterday. Hopefully the lady got her items back. Staff and maintenance are everywhere. The planetarium is for children and all in Dutch.
Informative museum for biology lovers.
Expensive but very worth it for biology people. We spent about 2 and a half hours there which seems a lot for such a small museum.
One of the best zoos ever
One of the best zoos I've ever visited. The staff are lovely and so informative, there are countless fascinating animals, and the park itself is gorgeous. It is large, spacious and well laid out. You can buy a map on arrival for a €2 donation - it's well worth it, as it will help you navigate and it's a great little souvenir for a worthy cause. Tickets can be bought in advance on their website, or at the ticket booth on arrival. Well worth a visit!
Wonderful fun and very informative
We loved learning about microbes. The exhibition was very well done and layout sensibly. Good mix of pour plates, interactive exhibits and information. I didn't go with children but if you have any kids interested in science, definitely bring them here
Really engaging and so different.
What a fantastic unique museum. We visited with 12 and 15 year old and both completely absorbed. Lots of interactivity looking at microscopes pressing buttons and learning about this fascinating world that lives around an on us.
One of the most unusual museums I've ever been to!
Micropia is one of the most unique museums that I've ever been to as it is dedicated to exploring the world of microbes. One of the main purposes of the museum is to encourage a more positive view of microbes and to improve public understanding of them. Visitors to the museum can see visual representations of microbes, as well as actual microbes through microscopes. There are many videos and interactive displays such as a Scan Yourself installation and a Kiss-o-Metre that allows you to see how many microbes two people share when they kiss. The Micropia museum is not exactly cheap at €17.50 for a standard ticket, but you can enter for free if you've got the I amsterdam card. If you're keen to visit the nearby Artis Zoo and/or the Artis Groote (Big) Museum too, but you're not entitled to free entry, you can buy a combined ticket for two or more Artis sites, which will get you a discount.
A unique and very interesting museum for adults and children alike! Changing exhibitions keep it interesting for revisiting. Highly recommend!
Fascinating museum!
We spent 3 and a half hours here and could've stayed longer! But then we're kind of science museum buffs, and like to go in depth. YP is a science student and there was plenty of interest. We happened to be there for a fun lunch time talk and Q&A session. We noticed that young children enjoyed it too, as they could seek out and acquire 'microbe' stamps on their 'petri dishes' and then put them into a giant interactive screen.
A microbiologist's fave!
Full disclosure, I'm a former microbiologist, so primed to enjoy this place! It's part of the three part ARTIS zoo-Groote-Micropia complex, which also has a sit-down restaurant and a small cafe. All seem to be card payment only. The Netherlands Museumkaart gets you into both museums but not the zoo. Micropia is two levels in a medium-sized building. After watching a brief orientation video, you go up in the lift and go around in a circle. There are various displays with live and fixed specimens and lots of microscopes to look through. You can see slime molds crawling around, volvoxes and rotifers, glowing microbes that help sea creatures in the dark, a live lab where white-coated people are doing ... something, a wall of Petri dishes with a variety of interesting cultures, and, our personal favorite, tardigrades, present in microscopic form and two larger-than-life sculptures. There is a big ant farm where ants are farming fungi and a couple of interactive experiences that show you the microbes in and on your body. For kids, there's a paper Petri dish they can collect microbes stamps on as they go around. Then back downstairs is a big exhibit showing how different food items rot (2-year old bread--yikes!) and a couple of other interactive stations, plus glass models of several microbes. There is a small gift shop. My son said the tardigrade items were not entirely accurate (faces anthropomorphized inaccurately with eyes), alas. Overall, I don't know if it's really worth a trip on its own unless, like us, it's really your thing. But it is a lovely addition to a trip to the zoo or Groote museum or something else in the area. You can learn a lot about microbes and see some cool stuff.
Fascinating insight into Microbes!
What a fascinating place. My teen, tween and I absolutely loved our visit to this interactive museum experience. It was brilliant to see all the various types of tiny critters under the microscopes, meet the microbes biologists and learn about the world of microbiology. It really inspired my 11 year old. It is worth allocating a couple of hours to visit and is well worth it.
Microbes galore!
This museum is a quick stop with some interesting exhibits to see. More fitting for adolescents, but it was still a fun stop along our way. In this museum you will see microbes, fungi, and virus from a variety of sources. There were fun, interactive exhibits on the 1 and 2 floors.
Unexpected artwork and brilliant displays
Beautifully displayed in a variety of visual and oral presentations, ARTIS Micropia was a delight even for this adult who is creeped out by the thought of mites living in my eyelashes! The space inside is extremely clean, well-organized, and spacious enough for groups and strollers / buggies. We went through a gate into the introductory area and waited for the elevator while learning about the first microscope and its creator. On the upper floor we were immersed in darkness to support looking through microscopes and seeing black-light illuminated substances. All placards were offered in both Dutch and English. The exhibits are touchable and there is a card that can be picked up upon entrance to stamp at various exhibits with an image of the featured microbe or organism. Back on the main floor is natural light with a tapestry version of fungus and video showing how the tapestry came together. Blown glass models of microscopic organisms also on display above dioramas. An interactive 6-foot long screen of a “sick person” for you to explore and heal their ails. Food with bacterial and fungal growth also on display and an explanation of preservatives’ impact. My 18-year old artist student was fascinated and enjoyed this museum tremendously. We were onsite for just about 2 hours. We are from the USA and used the Museumkaart tourist pass for entrance. There is a yummy burger spot across the block, and next door to that wonderful ice cream and sorbet. Make an afternoon of it!
Hidden universe of microscopic life
The best museum ever to unlock the mysteries of the microscopic world. Microscopic life, up close: You get to see microorganisms that are usually invisible to the naked eye — through high-tech microscopes and interactive exhibits. Live microbes: Many of the displays show living organisms doing their thing in real time. Microbe passport: Visitors can collect "microbes" in a virtual passport — it’s part science, part game. Everyday connections: It shows how microbes live on us, in us, and around us — from gut health to cheese making to environmental cleanup.
Mucha parte interactiva.
Go and dive into the smallest living creatures world
The smallest living creatures in the world are presented in a creative way. You are invited to join in, smart applications make that you can follow bacteria, fungae, virusses in a beautiful way, with pictures, videos etc. There is even a 'kiss experience' :-) I was on my own, but surrounded by teenagers who loved the expereince, also as they had do perform little experiments and tasks. Then a biology student told us, in fluent English, how they run the museum, its labs and how they keep the small world alive. It was wonderful.
Fun for all ages
On returning home, the customs agent asked our son what his favorite thing in Amsterdam was and he said this place. It far exceeded our expectations. It was very educational in a fun way (unless you are a germaphobe!) It was fun to see leaf cutter ants in action, too! I loved the glass art microbes on the first floor. Fun for all ages.
Discover the hidden world of microbes at micropia
Micropia in Amsterdam is a truly fascinating museum dedicated to the world of microbes. You get the unique opportunity to see live microbes under a microscope, which is both educational and mesmerizing. The museum also features a lab where you can learn more about the science behind these tiny organisms. One of the highlights is the "Microbe of the Week," where researchers give a short and engaging presentation about a specific microbe, making the experience even more interactive and fun. It’s a must-visit for anyone curious about the unseen world around us!
Wonderful concept and beautifully presented
Nothing like anything I've seen before! Almost everything in the museum is interactive. It's very fun and interesting for both kids and adults (no matter if you have a specific interest in the field or not). The exhibit is very diverse, and it doesn't get boring. We spent about two hours inside.
Leuk museum
A zoo for microbes!
Great attraction, suitable for adults, teens and young kids with interactive exhibits and tons of microbes to learn more about. You can scan your body, analyse a kiss, and study life under a microscope. Everyone working there was super friendly and happy to help too. A fun and unique experience.
Well worth visiting. Probably highlight of the trip for my teen
Smallish but super interesting. Right next to zoo. My teen especially likes tardigrades, and there was lots to look at; we were there for about 2 hours. Good interactive exhibits.

Very interesting museum!
We visited this on our first full day in Amsterdam. There are so many interesting exhibits to look at and the interactive exhibits really add to the experience (as well as being able to collect stamps as you go round!). We have recommended this to friends and family too!
Interactive and interesting museum
Great museum! Very interesting content displayed in an interactive and visually pleasing way. You could see live microbes under microscopes that you could operate yourself. A fun afternoon out for adults and kids alike!
great museum
as a microbiology student, this place was amazing!! i could have spent all day here. absolutely attend one of the daily talks if you can, it was fascinating. there is a ton of information and unusual microbes, plus rate opportunities to look down microscopes at microbes such as unusual algae - something i particularly enjoyed! even if you aren't particularly interested in micro you will still enjoy an hour or more visiting here. :)
Educational Museum
This is a very interesting and educational museum about the origin of bacteria and fungi. Everything is explained very descriptive. It has plenty top try out - not only perfect for children.
Good visit, worth a look.
Daughter was excited to visit this museum, and she loved it. Very informative, not huge but had lots to look at. Adults enjoyed it too. Only downside was the ticket doesn’t allow you access to the gift shop. Daughter wanted an Artis de Partis toy, and we weren’t allowed in to the shop to purchase one. We travelled to the station to purchase, which was a bit of a trek, so that was annoying.
Unique museum experience
Def a great alternative to the typical art museums when visiting the city. Super interesting and informative experience and great for all ages. The nerd in me loved every moment. I would highly recommend. Also next to the zoo and can combine tix for a small discount.
Disgustingly fab!
Who knew gross little microbes could be so fascinating? Lots of interesting exhibits & displays full of interesting facts and info. The body scan is particularly disturbing! For all ages but young ones will really enjoy it. Good fun.
Let your inner science Geek explore
This place was amazing. My science nerd of a husband really wanted to go. I have to say I am glad we did. All of the interactive exhibits are well done, educational and entertaining. We were there for almost three hours, the time just flew. I guess my inner science nerd was allowed to shine.
Unique Museum
A wonderfully designed museum with a real sense of humor; it kept family and friends engaged for 1-2 hours.
On a adoré !
