Lovers cruise
Very enjoyble experience, the captain of the cruise gave us a very funny and interesting description of the city, and the staff gave an excellent service.
Amsterdam City River Cruise
The canal cruise was perfect, the captin come guide gave us headphones to listen in our own language. The riverboat was clean and tidy, easy to walk on and off, it was a nice day and we got some beautiful pictures!! A great end to a fantastic tourist holiday!!
Early evening cruise
We did the early evening cruise to see the lights of the city. Easy to get tickets by turning up and allocated the next cruise. There is an audio link that you can use, but we decided to just sit outside and watch the views. An hour cruise which was interesting and pretty.
Great information finding cruise
We had an hour cruise around the canals in Amsterdam and learnt a lot whilst doing it. We really enjoyed every second. My five year old didn’t want to get off. The captain was also very knowledgeable.
A Must Try
This is a must do on your list of things to do while visiting Amsterdam. It takes you through areas that you may not be able to walk to. The captain points out things of interest and tells the story behind it.
Crociera easy
Crociera molto carina con guida in tutte le lingue. Partenza vicino ala stazione centrale. Durata circa un ora. Visita dei canali principali di Amsterdam. Da provare
A fab way to see Amsterdam
We had a really lovely time on the one-hour canal cruise. Our captain was very lovely and cracked a good few jokes throughout the tour. The GPS guided tour via the headphones was a fab idea and there were so many language options available which was a really pleasant surprise. We learned so much about the history of the city and the tour even helped us to find places to visit again in further detail after the tour. The price was extremely reasonable considering the excellent experience we got, and our boat even left a little early which was nice. All in all, we would definitely recommend it!
The captian made the experience
We really enjoyed it. We show I I amsterdam cards at the ticket office ans were on a boat and on our way within 10 minutes. Our captain (Tony I believe was his name) was lovely ,cheerful and very knowledge of the area, he also had 2 traniees with him and they were also lovely. The facilties were clean. If I hadn't have had the I amsterdam card I would have still paid what the price was (which I think is reasonable).
Well worth the experience
1st time in Amsterdam and loved it Booked on the Lovers Canal cruise early in the morning to get a feel for the city and to get our bearings The tour showed the highlights of the city and the comentry was good
Cruising backward :(
sitting backward is really annoying... Except that I think it is very nice and the captain was a nice guy, he was really funny, making jokes.
Go with Lovers
Booked through Get Your Guide literally 20 mins before boarding. They let us join a boat that was boarding as soon as we got there, which was great, no standing around as they weren’t so busy. We took a daytime trip and glad we did. Maybe evening cruises would be better in warmer months with open boats. The boat was modern, clean and warm and no condensation at all during any part of our cruise. The headphones were included and the audio commentary was interesting. The captain also added bits and pieces of extra info which was appreciated. It was a great introduction to the canals of Amsterdam as we decided to do this trip literally an hour after arriving in Amsterdam. It helped us with our bearings and with general historical info about the city. The reason for 4 rather than 5 stars is that we seemed to stay on one canal, no museums seen, no Anne Frank house, nothing like that, which was a shame as lots of tourists probably visit these places afterwards. Maybe the canal boat starting from the museums area take that route? We took the one from the station. There are lots of canal boat companies, but we were more than happy with Lovers as their boats appear a lot more modern than many others we saw. I would definitely recommend the cruise and my teenage daughter said it was one of the nicest things we did when in Amsterdam.
Great couples tour
A amazing tour with some great canal boat skills performed and a great host. This tour is very much for couples and being alone I felt a little out of place.
A Great Way To See The City
Done the open boat tour during the summer. A great way to see the city and the audio guide gave plenty of information along the way. Extremely relaxing to the point I almost fell asleep half way around. Would definitely do the tour again if I’m back in Amsterdam
Quick visit to see Amsterdam
Guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. Although it rained, I still enjoyed the tour. The only complaint was the audio was difficult to hear at times.
Relaxing hour on the canals
Nice relaxing hour around the canals. Duco (sorry if I have not got the name correct) was informative with history and fun facts. Would recommend.
Good cruise
It was educational, slowed down at the right places. The pilot was polite and explained well- was fun and energetic.
Boka i god tid!
Weekend i Amsterdam
Fint men mycket
Bra museum men stort. Audioguiden lite påfrestande. Specialutställningen var intressant. Rekommenderas.
Mycket folk men bra
10 out of 10 would recommend 👌
Lovely museum with beautiful art pieces! Fully booked, but still efficient and not too crowded. Spacious, clean and calm. Great collection! It is really something else seeing the pieces up close, the layers and strokes! Very good audio guide! Recommend using it! Loved the temporary exhibit too, with the family history ❤️ Really nice shops too! Great experience all over!!! I even got to see my favorite one from it's visit in Norway in 2015 - Undergrowth 🥰 Van Gogh has been my favorite ever since and I finally got to visit the museum in Amsterdam. 🥰 Amazing 👏
Brilliant
Fantastic experience . Completely different to the chaos of the Rijkemuseum . Still a lot of people but everyone just moving around slowly and in the same direction mostly . Brilliant temporary exhibition on at the moment as well before you star the main event . Fascinating stuff .
Van Gogh compendium of knowledge
Beautiful pictures painted by Van Gogh, his struggle with mental disease, support of the family. The whole biography about one of the most important painters in history in one place. Truly impressed.
A shrine to Van Gogh
Having been to the Amsterdam a number of times without visiting the Van Gogh Museum has been something of a cardinal sin. But it is never too late to amend a mistake, and so I finally did. While you will find this Dutch master's work scattered across the world's great museums and celebrated endlessly in books, there is no place that comes close to being a shrine to his legacy, his contribution to art and his devotion to his craft. That said, if you're in Amsterdam, make time for it. If you're planning a visit, book your ticket in advance because you won't be the only one in the queue. Van Gogh continues to draw admirers from every corner of the world, more than a century after his death. The museum, as I saw it, demands your attention and time. Every floor, every gallery and every painting asks you to slow down. As you make your way through the collection, the exhibits tell the story of how Vincent van Gogh became the artist the world knows today. They do not shy away from his personal struggles or the loneliness that marked much of his life or his mental health struggles. They also reveal the importance of the people who helped him, above all the bond he shared with his brother, Theo. His paintings will, of course, grip you, they will hold you, and for the right reasons. From the blossom series to the sunflowers and many of his other celebrated works, the colours and brushstrokes are instantly recognisable. But what stays with you long after you leave is not simply the beauty of the paintings, it is the humanity behind them and the human behind them. The museum's curators, in my opinion, have done an exceptional job of allowing visitors to understand not only the artist's work, but also the person who created it, his doubts and his commitment to art despite repeated setbacks. Standing before these canvases, it becomes clear that Vincent was not trying to paint the world as it appeared, he was trying to paint what it felt like to experience it. His thick brushstrokes, bold colours and restless compositions transformed ordinary landscapes, flowers and faces into emotional landscapes. That is why his work still feels contemporary, it speaks less to the eye than to the human condition itself, reminding us that great art does not emerge from perfection but from an uncompromising determination to make meaning out of joy, suffering and everything in between. All in all, the Van Gogh Museum succeeds because it understands that preserving a legacy is about more than displaying paintings. It is about telling the story of the man behind them. Very few museums do that with as much care, depth and respect.
A bucket list moment
The Van Gogh museum had long been on my list and was one of the main reasons for our trip, it did not disappoint! The museum is thoughtfully laid out and the accompanying audio tour guides you through Van Goghs life, inspirations and the art of the time. You could easily lose yourself here for a day immersed in the exhibits, artwork and artifacts.
Outstanding Gallery
Located in the "museum quarter" (many museums within a 5 minute stroll) is the world famous Van Gogh Museum. The museum although not new, it is new for us & so much nicer and grander than the previous building which we visited a couple of decades ago. We booked in advance and getting in was easy, the entrance level has escalators that descend into a large area which has cafe's, gift shops etc, and of course the entrance into the main gallery which is set over several floors. Many people there, but not to busy and even the most famous of pictures was easy to access. I had not seen "the potato eaters" before, which was a treat. Do book online in advance otherwise you may not be able to visit on the date/time that suits you.
Unbelievable Experience and a lasting impression
I loved my visit to the Van Gogh Museum. I spent almost 4 hours here. The museum is very well laid out and takes you on a step-by-step journey through the life of Vincent Van Gogh. The exhibits here are thought-provoking, with many lessons about life. Even if you are not a fan of Van Gogh’s art, you will still learn something about life with a visit to the museum. A lot of food for thought. I left the museum with a lasting impression.
Da non perdere
Ottimo museo. Nuovo e ben curato. Personale super organizzato e un ottima audioguida
Vraiment a faire !
Worth a visit, but get the audio guide!
This was a stopover for us before catching the night train. We found ourselves enjoying it much more than we had expected to. It was informative (the audio guide was very good) and the paintings were well displayed. We would definitely recommend a visit. We did have lunch in the restaurant, and that we did not feel was very good value for money.
No substitute for seeing this collection in person.
The main gallery of the museum is a wonderful experience - it is excellently curated, and spaciously presented. The cost of the admission fee is extremely reasonable given the the breadth of the collection on display. Staff were very pleasant. I would expect most people would want to dedicate at least several hours (at a minimum) to have a good experience of the collection. Given our experience (mid-afternoon), it was very busy, and certain room and galleries felt very crowded at times, with bottlenecks at the 'usual suspect' iconic paintings, so if going again, I would probably recommend/aim an earlier visiting time (morning might be best). Ultimately, There is really no substitute to seeing this collection in person and spending as much time as possible absorbing them.
Relaxing and educational
Visited as an excursion on a cruise. I did a self guided audio tour. Enjoyed it and learned a lot. There are public restrooms, a place to eat and a gift shop. There is also an escalator to shopping mall type area.
A day well spent at the Van Gogh Museum!
My first visit to the Van Gogh Museum was an unforgettable experience. I arrived on a Saturday right when the museum opened at 9:00 AM and ended up staying until closing time at 6:00 PM. Even after spending the entire day there, I still felt like there was more to discover. As home to the largest collection of Van Gogh’s works in the world, the museum offers a remarkable journey through both his art and his life. I highly recommend getting the audio guide. I chose the English version, and I appreciated that it offered both shorter and more in-depth tours. The extended version takes about 90 minutes and provides fascinating stories behind the paintings and the artist himself. The permanent collection spans multiple floors and contains many of Van Gogh’s most famous works, including Sunflowers, Wheatfield with Crows, and his unfinished final painting, Tree Roots. One thing I particularly enjoyed was learning about the myths surrounding some of his paintings. For example, I had always heard that Wheatfield with Crows was his last painting, but the museum explains that he actually painted several more optimistic works afterward. The exhibition does much more than display paintings. It tells the story of Vincent van Gogh as a person - his struggles, his love of nature, and especially his close relationship with his brother Theo van Gogh, whose support was essential throughout Vincent’s life. Seeing the letters and learning about their bond added a deeply human dimension to the experience. The museum also showcases works by artists who inspired Van Gogh, such as Claude Monet, as well as artists who were later influenced by him. It provides valuable context for understanding his place in art history. One of my favorite moments was at the very beginning of the exhibition, where visitors encounter Van Gogh through his self-portraits. I had always wondered why he painted himself so often. The museum explains that he simply could not afford to hire models, so he used his own reflection as a subject. Small details like this made the artist feel much more relatable. The temporary exhibition was also excellent and included works such as Almond Blossoms. There was plenty to see beyond the permanent collection. Despite being very crowded, especially on a Saturday, the museum was well organized. Visitor flow was managed efficiently, and while there were lines at times, everything moved smoothly. The museum also provides lockers for luggage storage, clean restrooms near the café area, and a café serving good food. I also enjoyed the museum shop and creative spaces where visitors can engage with the artwork in different ways, including activities inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings. Perhaps the most inspiring part of the visit was learning about Van Gogh’s incredible dedication to his craft. In roughly the last 70 days of his life, he created around 75 paintings - an astonishing level of productivity! Walking through the galleries and seeing the beauty he found in ordinary landscapes, nature, and everyday life was genuinely moving. Even though some of his most famous works, such as The Starry Night (Museum of Modern Art, New York) and certain self-portraits held by other museums around the world, are not here, the collection is extraordinary and offers an unparalleled insight into Van Gogh’s artistic journey. Whether you are an art lover or simply curious about one of history’s most influential painters, the Van Gogh Museum is absolutely worth a visit. Plan to spend several hours here - you will need them.
Fascinating and interesting museum
This is one of the best and most interesting museums I have ever visited. It not only houses the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings in the world, but also a fascinating and understandable history of his remarkable life. I got goose bumps just being that close to so many amazing paintings. It's absolutely necessary to book a spot in advance. And by all means pay for the audio guide -- it's well worth the small extra cost.
Van Gogh Wonderful -Audio Guide Terrible
The story of Van Gogh and his paintings was in chronological order. It was exciting to see some of the paintings up close especially the Sunflowers. His history of mental illness is also covered, but the emphasis is on his artwork and how it changed over time. My complaint is about the audio guides. Horrible. I could barely keep mine on. It was difficult to use and hard to use for each painting in the rooms.
Excellent, clean and modern museum
I’m not usually someone who goes to art galleries, but this was recommended to me. It did not disappoint. It is spotlessly clean in the museum. The staff are very friendly. Free lockers for your belongings (no backpacks allowed, which is standard in many museums). The exhibitions were very interesting. We declined the audio guide as we just wanted to just soak in the art and read the information. The permanent collection was my favourite, but it was also interesting to see other works from different artists in the current exhibition too. One thing that was a bit annoying (and sadly pretty common) was a significant number of people just wandering round filming non-stop. It impacted on our enjoyment a bit. It was also kind of sad to see people viewing the gallery through a camera lens (which you could easily do at home) rather than taking the opportunity to view those paintings directly with just their eyes and be in the moment with the artwork (none of this is the fault of the museum, however).
Exploring the Life and Art of Vincent van Gogh
We really enjoyed our visit to the Van Gogh Museum. The museum offers a fascinating journey through the life and work of Vincent van Gogh, with a large collection of paintings, drawings, and personal stories that help visitors understand his artistic development and unique style. The exhibition is well organized, making it easy to follow Van Gogh’s career from his early works to his later masterpieces. I especially appreciated the opportunity to see so many of his paintings in one place and learn more about the influences behind his art. The museum is modern, well maintained, and provides a comfortable environment for visitors. That said, I was hoping to see a few more of his most iconic and impressive paintings. While the collection is extensive and interesting, We felt that the presence of additional world-famous masterpieces would have made the experience even more memorable. Nevertheless, the artworks on display are beautiful and offer valuable insight into one of history’s greatest artists. Overall, the Van Gogh Museum is a very nice place to visit in Amsterdam. It combines art, history, and culture in an engaging way and is well worth a visit for anyone interested in painting or looking to learn more about Van Gogh’s remarkable life and legacy. Try it.
Really nice
Really nice experience. We had a docent led tour of the “yellow” exhibit. Small size ensures you see it all without being overwhelmed.
🌻
The life and art of Van Gogh
Fantastic museum with a huge collection of Dutch masterpieces. The museum is on 4 levels starting with the middle ages on the ground floor and working up to more modern art on the 3rd floor. You definitely see a change in styles through the centuries with the best works largely on the 1st and 2nd floors. They offer guided tours and self guided audio to help you absorb it all. It takes at least 2-3 hours to get through it all. Recommend buying tickets a day or two ahead as tickets are timed entry and they sell out quickly
What a change in 40 years
We visited the museum back in the late 80"s when it was a small structure with very limited display space. It has change completely from that to a very sophiscated and wildly popular venue. The old structure is still in place; however, it has been transformed into a much larger display area that is far more appropriate for the art on display. There are much bigger crowds today because of the size of the total museum. The new (very modern--as the stock photo shows) structure attached to the old building via a wonderful lobby area is a delight to make the entrance to the larger area of very special works of Van Gogh. The whole space of the new area is packed with visitors. But the good news is that it is easier to see the works up close and personal. This is one of the top stops in Amsterdam, and is well worth your time (minimum of 2 hours) if you are familiar with Van Gogh. Assuming that you are, you can skip the very small type plaques and "standard" stories about him and his relationship with his brother--as well as his frustrations with others. If not, get his back story(s) "on line" and save your time to appreciate the works.
Excellent Museum in Amsterdam
Excellent in design, painting pieces and organization. Book online in advance as it gets busy. We went early in the morning as 9 am and it was already crowded. Pay extra for the audio guide it is worthy. Kids are not charge. Bag storage is included. It takes a good 2 hours. We recommend it.
Interesting Insight to Van Gogh
Pre booked 6 weeks in advance as friends advised us that it gets very busy. The museum offers an interesting insight to Van Gogh & his life. The audio was very good and easy to follow. The museum whilst busy was quite easily navigated with only some backing up mainly at famous painting. Well worth a visit and worth the entrance fee.
A Journey Worth Taking
Visiting the Van Gogh Museum was such a beautiful and moving experience. You truly feel a deep connection to him through his art; his pain, passion, and intensity come through in every brushstroke. Seeing iconic works like Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, and The Potato Eaters in person was powerful in a way photos of his art simply can't capture. The museum is thoughtfully curated, allowing you to follow his life chronologically and really understand the emotional journey behind the paintings. If you're looking for a meaningful, immersive experience, you’ll find that here! *I visited in January on a Tuesday around 1:30 PM, and it was not overly crowded. I was able to move through the galleries and spend time admiring all of his work without feeling rushed. If you are going during peak season, I would recommend getting there early.
An Amsterdam Must Visit
The Van Gogh Museum is a must visit when in Amsterdam. The museum features paintings and very interesting historical information. The museum houses the world's largest collection of Van Gogh paintings. A self guided walking headphone tour is highly recommended. The tour gives details of Van Gogh's paintings and life and delves deeply into background, family and hardships that made Van Gogh the painter that he became. A recommendation is to buy your ticket in advance an on line to insure entrance.
Book ahead but make sure you go.
This is a fantastic collection of art work by Van Gogh. We got there early to avoid crowds. You have to book in advance. The audio tour that accompanies is a must as it walks you through his life. A must visit!
Recommendation For Art Lovers 😍
I always wanted to visit and I was absolutely blown away. 😍 I’d recommend the museum to anyone who is interested in art and art history because it’s really interesting! The price is not too much for what you get to experience 👍
Nice
Tickets are hard to get at the door, need to reserve ahead of time
Essential to see, crowded, have ticket pre-bought
Tip: 1) Must buy timed entry tickets on line. Don’t walk up as it’s always sold out. Tickets usually sell out days in advance so plan early. If you’re travelling, and use an eSIM, note that buying requires SMS verification which could be a problem. 2) Get an audio guide. It’s reasonably priced and somewhat informative. Better than nothing but prefer the Rijks version that is free through their app 3) Prepare for crowds especially around celebrated paintings with not a lot of places to sit. There are three floors that mostly work via two staircases. (although there are elevators but not enough for all) The museum contains works that influenced Van Gogh and artists that were influenced by him. It also contains some close peers. What is interesting? There is a section that informs about pivotal family support by his brother (including letters) who financed him and his sister in law who promoted his unknown works after his death and made his work famous today.
Wow! A must see.
A definite place to put on your bucket list. This man was truly gifted and it portrays his troubled life with care and respect. We never realised what a prolific painter he was, producing wonderful paintings in such a short period. The museum contains many significant artist’s paintings which were his colleagues of day. A very enjoyable experience.
Loved it
A must see for all levels of art lovers. I learned so much and really enjoyed this museum
Wonderful museum
Had a wonderful time at the museum. I had the audio guide and I would really recommend it if you’re not joining a tour. Learned a bunch of new stuff about him and it was well organized. Would definitely recommend everyone to take a visit and be prepared to spend many hours wondering around

Very nice museum
Very nice museum. Audio tour offers levels of interest- we picked highlights and this was perfect for our limited time. Clean, organized and great story of his life.
Fascinating view of the artist.
Great information about the artists life and some of his most famous paintings, but I would have liked to see even more of his paintings.
Incontournable
Éblouissant. Émouvant. Le point d'orgue de notre séjour.
