Make time for Het Scheepvaart in Amsterdam
This is a fabulous museum, first class! The building itself is my favorite part but the exhibitions were also excellent. There was a fascinating exhibition of a Dutch solo sailor and the shop was very good. Highly recommend.

pro/con/advices- great and fun museum
PROS * A very fun place to visit * Interesting and informative- learn about Dutch history and the water: relive the era when the Netherlands was a sea-faring world leader in trade and commerce... and war * Very well designed * Nice interesting building that sits on the water * Outstanding well-designed presentations and exhibits * See other incredible ship models and very creative and imaginative historical and colorful mastheads from historical ships * Multiple themed rooms with outstanding clear presentations * Amazing displays of historical marine boating materials and artifacts * Fascinating intriguing attractive displays * The 17th century recreated anchored Dutch boat is the best- exploring it alone could take up to an hour! See how the seamen and crewmen lived and worked * Spacious clean convenient secured lockers in the basement to keep stuff CONS * The cost is 19 euros regardless of when one arrives, and no (senior) discount * It closes at 1700 hours "I VISITED THIS PLACE"... ... because it was on my short list of important interesting sites that I chose for my (way too) short (first) visit to Amsterdam. That day started with the Anne Frank House and proceeded to the Portuguese Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, passing the Dutch Resistance Museum. this incredible fantastic Dutch National Maritime Museum and then the Auschwitz Holocaust Memorial and then the Analogues concert at Carre Theater (of course all of these have already been extensively reviewed by me). I arrived at 1600h, an hour before the 1700h closure and was charged the entire 19 euros. I conveniently stored my stuff in the massive modern combo stored locker room. I raced and ran through the exhibits- as much and as many as I could. I totally enjoyed myself- it is a well-designed, pleasingly presented demonstration of a massive amount of historical Dutch history and ships. The recreated docked full-size 17th century Dutch trading ship is incredible and outstanding: I loved it. I ran through every single section of it, inside and out. The accuracy of the creation is incredible. WAS IT WORTH THE COST? For me as a solo budget traveler, it seemed expensive- even if I had arrived at 0900h. For a family with young children who would absolutely love this museum, that can add up quickly (even with children's price, which is probably less expensive. WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN? Sure- I'd love to be able to more leisurely explore the massive exhibits of information and artifacts and to explore the ship again. But at 19 euros, that's probably not going to happen for this senior budget traveler. ADVICES Definitely do go at least once- enjoy all the exhibits, especially the full-size recreated ship. FULL DISCLOSURE "I visited this place" with the intention and plan to write a thorough complete and "helpful" review and to attach and submit many "helpful" photos here on tripadvisor, so if these did "help" you, please indicate that by tikking the "thumbs up" symbol. Thanks.

An inclusive maritime history museum
This is pretty close to Amsterdam Centraal and the Resistance Museum, so it's pretty easy to get to from either of those areas. We stopped in because my partner is very interested in maritime history; this one is special because the building is beautiful; it's the former trading building. It's full of art (which I didn't quite expect), and in true Dutch fashion, it is very honest about its history. They did not hide their colonial past and included achievements from their former colonies--something other colonizers appear to be allergic to. Unlike other colonizers, they also didn't whitewash anything. There's also a segment about the various environments, which was interesting. You hear the story of shipwrecked sailors who survived against all odds in the arctic. We ended the visit with a tour of a replica VOC ship, and a quick visit of a retired royal boat. The scenery is also beautiful. If you're on the fence about this museum, you can wait until you're there to decide--unlike the Rembrandt House, Riksmuseum, Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum, this one doesn't sell out quickly. We also managed to snag a deal for it on Groupon, so definitely check there.

Great history and current exhibits
Beautiful building. Exhibits are very interesting for adults. Varied exhibits about the city as a port, its growth, past and current use, and the broader Dutch maritime history. We learned a lot. Special exhibit on whaling was great for kids to understand that history. The audio guides are free with tickets and were helpful to understand more. Cafe had some good food and wasn’t too expensive. They have a kids menu.

Lovely covered courtyard
Must confess we were pretty museum’d out by the time we visited but still enjoyed it. Entry included with our I Amsterdam card so we went. If you walk there, as you cross the bridge heading towards museum from centraal station direction, look across to the right and you can see the only windmill in Amsterdam city in the distance. The building is fabulous, make sure you go down to the bathrooms as the vaulted area down there is impressive. We didn’t look at everything. We took the audio guide on offer but found we read the info boards rather than listening to the guide. The replica sailing ship is well presented, quite tricky to move around if you’re not too mobile and as you’d expect, mind your head! Favourite museum displays were those related to navigation in a starlit section and the section on books/maps. Fascinating to see these early “travel guides” with their depictions of local scenes and people’s. Do sit in the courtyard area which is a lovely space, wait until there’s a burst of sunshine and see the effect of the roof line shadows across the walls because it’s beautiful.

Really fascinating!
Stunning museum and full of such amazing artefacts and information. My husband and I are specifically interested in boats and sea history etc which is the main reason we went here but I think it would suit anybody. Some really interesting things to look at in a very beautiful building. Really enjoyed it.
