Visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam

MARAVILLOSO
Uno de mis museos favoritos. Me encantó!!!!
excellent museum
super busy!! but incredible art of course
Rijksmuseum
I had the Iamamsterdam card and entrance to this museum was included. The price for entry is 25 euro so I will base my review on that price. Quite a big museum with a large collection. Tonnes and tonnes of old paintings. There was a good section with handcrafted wooden ships which was very interesting. The library was impressive. Overall I would say this is more a museum for the art lover than the weekend tourist. If you don't have a serious interest in old paintings then you probably wont feel the entrance price is worth it. There is the option of a tour guide for groups at a extra charge of 7.50 per person. Under 18s get free admission to the museum. The museum is a short walk from the museumplan tram stop.
Good museum
Good museum. Lots to see and a tour helps but give yourself enough time as the tour can take too long and you risk missing some great pieces.
Don't miss out on the additional offered tour
Group tour worth doing. Very informative on some highlights and then time to wander alone. Beautifully set out museum. Some areas v busy but manageable.
Worth the hype
Exceeded our very high expectations! This museum is absolute perfection. They know what they’re doing and got it right. Manageable size with world class exhibits. The inevitable crowds are managed and I really appreciate the large hard cards for some of the more popular pieces on display. The café was an unexpected bonus. Had a v nice meal there.
Worth the ticket
Very enjoyable Plan on staying at least 3 hours Not as crowded as I thought it would be. Steadfast very helpful.
Less Crowded Night Watch Viewing and Ship Models
A wonderful museum full of fantastic art and artifacts. We lined up at the door 20 minutes early which was too much as people didn't start to line up until 10 minutes before opening. If you want to view The Night Watch almost alone, enter the museum right as it opens and go straight to the painting on level 2. We were the only ones in the entire gallery as everyone else was making their way through the lower floors. A half hour later, there were dozens of people jockeying for position. It was under restoration so it had a large scaffold around it but it was still very impressive. The wooden ship models on the lower level were very impressive and detailed.
Must-see museum
We really enjoyed the Rijksmuseum. It provides a free audio tour inside by downloading the app and using your own smart phone to tour according to your preferences (highlights, time period, etc.) The staff was very helpful. We did learn the hard way that there are many copy websites that are not THE authentic Rijksmuseum website. While the tickets we purchased were valid to get us in, they were overpriced.
A journey through Dutch Art and History
Fantastic museum with a huge collection of Dutch masterpieces. The museum is on 4 levels starting with the middle ages on the ground floor and working up to more modern art on the 3rd floor. You definitely see a change in styles through the centuries with the best works largely on the 1st and 2nd floors. They offer guided tours and self guided audio to help you absorb it all. It takes at least 2-3 hours to get through it all. Recommend buying tickets a day or two ahead as tickets are timed entry and they sell out quickly
Wow wow wow!!
I spent 3 hours in this museum and I could have stayed longer. Make sure to get the headphones to learn more about the painters and their work or take a tour with the many tour guides. The restaurant is also an added attraction. The gift shop is also definitely worth visiting, with great ideas for family gifts.
Beautiful!
This was a huge museum! We went on a whim, as we were just wandering around the city. It had so much art, you truly could spend hours in there. If you’re an art nerd, it is definitely worth going. Lots of Rembrandt pieces, among several other notable artists and pieces from the 1600s-1900s. Very cool!
een echte aanrader.
Reeds gedaan volgt nu nog een foto
Nice Museum
We were there for three hours and didn’t really spend the time the museum deserves. The Nigth Watch paint from Rembrandt is under restoration so be aware of it you won’t be able to see it. Adults are $25 and kids under 18y/o are not charge. The security is very tight since my daughter was tired and they don’t accept you seat to close your eyes. It was very busy with some school groups but it is a wonderful museum to visit.
Historical Netherlands Art Museum
When visiting Amsterdam, you must visit the Rijksmuseum. The museum houses Dutch art and artifacts from the middle ages through the 20th century. Paintings and other art work from Rembrandt, Vermeer and other prominent artists of the time. This is a large museum that could take you all day to explore. A good time element would be 2 to 4 hours so not to be overwhelmed.
Great museum
Beautiful museum with so much to see. The building itself is amazing, and the art collection is seriously impressive.
Good Visit
We did not reserve tickets online as they were sold out. There was a queue outside but no signage as to where to wait to buy tickets. Once inside, there were no directions for the lift (although the staff were very helpful). Only one set of bathrooms in the basement. Apart from that, wonderful experience. I would say you need at least 3 hours. Across the street at the Cobra Cafe they have a cell phone charging cabinet. Brilliant!! I dont know if they are all over Holland but such a good idea.
Extensive collection, attractive building, crowds, Night Watch off for restoration
The Good 1) Large collection in an attractive building 2) The map is useful and points out highlights 3) A free downloadable app provides museum commentary on various works for free 4) Online timed entry actually allows you to come up to two hours before or after your slot. You can also buy at a kiosk near the door, but more efficient online. 5) They recycle museum paper maps at exit The Bad 1) Admission is expensive 2) Building has been subjected to various renovations so flow is not always optimal, or finding and getting to a washroom 3) Will be crowds especially around famous works 4) Night Watch is down for years of restoration. You can see them at work. 5) Not really a lot of refreshment options with enough seats
Amazing Experience
One of the best museums I have ever visited. Amazing facility and collections. The staff were very helpful. Well done.
A walk through time
Visiting this museum felt like stepping into a living storybook of art and history. Inside, the space is breathtaking with high ceilings, beautiful natural light and a layout that invites you to wonder rather than rush. Inside, the space is breathtaking — high ceilings, beautiful natural light, and a layout that invites you to wander rather than rush. Every room feels thoughtfully curated, making it easy to get lost (in the best way) among centuries of Dutch art and culture. Of course, seeing masterpieces like The Night Watch by Rembrandt in person is unforgettable. There’s something surreal about standing in front of a painting you’ve seen countless times in books and online — the scale, the detail, the presence… it all hits differently. What I loved most was how the museum balances grandeur with intimacy. You’ll find massive, dramatic works alongside smaller, delicate pieces that pull you in quietly. It never feels overwhelming — just immersive. Overall, the Rijksmuseum is more than just a collection of art; it’s an experience that stays with you. Whether you’re deeply into art or just curious, it’s absolutely worth visiting.
Always excellent
Another fantastic visit to this amazing museum. This time the temporary exhibition Metamorphoses was the highlight along with finishing off seeing the permanent collection from previously. Friendly avd welcoming staff throughout. Free entry with Museumcard.
A must for art lovers
Some wonderful old works of art on display in a very modern building
Not a museum to be missed
This is a superb educational site. So many art artifacts you need a complete day to look around whereas we only had a couple of hours. So many paintings from Masters, so much to see on so many floors. We queued to but tickets outside the museum and then queued to get in. We were not disappointed with our time there and need to return to see more. The place was crowded and the cafeterias packed.
One of the Top Art Museums in the World - Amsterdam Priority Visit
When you first start thinking about a visit to Amsterdam, this is or ought to be at the top of your list. It is definitely one of the top 10 Art Museums in the world, possibly Top 5. There was a time in the 17th century when the renowned, respected and famous artist in the world were Dutch with their own style of painting and a school to teach it. This was the time of the Dutch Masters such as Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Frans Hals and many of their paintings are here. The Rijksmuseum was first founded in 1798 in the Hauge to promote and preserve this moment of Dutch Cultural history and moved to Amsterdam in 1808 to showcase its amazing collection in Holland's lead city. In Amsterdam's second golden age at the end of the 19th Century, the community and country decided to build the collection its own building specifically to highlight the art in a building that was just as exceptional as the art. For this they hired Pierre Cuypers who was designing many of the great civic buildings of this age like the Centraal Train Station. In many places, like the Great Hall and the Library, the building is just as impressive as the art. Today, that building displays over 8,000 pieces of art and history out of its collection over a million and more than 2 million people visit annually to see them. The heart of the collection is displayed in the Great Hall which are the most famous and recognized paintings of the Dutch Masters. Whether the painting or the building, you have to plan a visit here. A prudent plan would be to buy reservation tickets for a certain before your visit. Plan to see the Van Gogh or Stedelijk around the same time as they are all next to each other in the Museum Quarter. We visited the Van Gogh first at 9:30 and then the Rijksmuseum at 11:00. We then when walked for lunch nearby at 1:15. I strongly suggest you get reservations for all three as it will make your time flow more efficiently. Also note that Vondel Park is nearby as well in the planning for your day. Whether you like art or not, you need to make time for this museum and others in the Museum Quarter. They are that incredible, and I am not the biggest art person.
Incontournable !
VanGogh/Rembrandt in Amsterdam
The venue, presentation, and the experience was great. We’ve been to several “immersive” classic artist events before but the setting in the church for this one made it the best we’ve experienced.
Lovely way to spend 40 minutes
I wasn't completely sure what to expect, but it was great! Not gimmicky at all - just really well done and very impressive. Music and narration not too loud either, which can be a problem with these things. Would recommend!
Amazing experience, worth ever penny
An amazing immersive experience in a landmark historical church. Not to be missed! You can lie on a beanbag or sit on a seat and experience an amazing light show of moving paintings by van Gogh and Rembrandt. The story telling was top notch and I learned interesting new aspects about both painters. Omlovrd it so much, I want to go again!
Emersive, interesting, fun
IT was great althoug the sound could be a bit more clear i loved it.
It was a beautiful immersion of paintings and light combine with information about the painters and their lives.
It was a very beautiful, informative, and interesting exhibition. Interesting facts were woven in with stories about the painters and their experiences.
Zeker doen!
Good Experience
It's a great way to say Van Gogh in a new light. Lovely venue. Some of the reviews here are bizarre, did people not read the title of what this experience is about? Far from a scam. Worthwhile.
An experience not to miss
This Van Gogh and Rembrandt light experience was held a beautiful 400 year old church in Amsterdam. It was a truly amazing and unique experience. The setting and music was beautiful, which really added to the whole experience. Those who produced the projections, music and narration are also artists. Loved it and would highly recommend to everyone who has the opportunity to attend. Thank you. Katherine and Philip (Ireland)
Lovely experience
Really enjoyed the fantastic visuals of both Van Gogh and Rembrandt. A great experience and introduction for young people and adults alike.
A journey into the artistic soul of two great artists
The setting is the church .. Why? It’s important and you have to find out. Van Gogh was influenced and affected and influenced by Rembrandt Two Dutch Magna artists in a period over 4 centuries The experience is delightful and its educational What inspired me was the documentary and some amazing biography of Van Gogh - personal details about his journey and artistic development of his paintings How he would choose to spend the last 10 days of his life - was a profound thought for me to reflect too! ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word remains’ - their legacy lives on… I enjoyed the setting and the story and left feeling enriched by what I learned It had soul in this illumination! Thank you Julie and Benjamin for this creative and educational experience
what to do in Amsterdam
this experience was beautiful!! we had a great time looking at the paintings that were projected and also listening to a touching story about van gogh and rembrandt. the staff was also very understanding about the schedule because we had tickets at 11 and they let us at 12 because we were late
Brothers in Light...
Rembrandt meets Vincent in a subtle and impressive way..Light, Colors and Imagination visualised in a special setting. A curch in the heart of Amsterdam..
A lovely reason to pause for 40 mins and soak up some Dutch culture
We spent 40 minutes lying on bean bags in a beautiful grand building watching a fantasic show of Rembrant and Van Goh’s Work with a lovely naration. It was such a relaxing experience and a pleasant break from walking around this stunning city.
Verrassend.
Amazing experience
An absolutely amazing experience. We booked late (just turned up) and the experience was well worth it. We sat in seats, but there were bean bags to lie on as well. Totally immersive and captivating. Well worth the visit. Easy walking distance from the station and nice cafes nearby for a snack whilst waiting for our slot.
A must see experience
An amazing experience. It is in a beautiful massive church which is still used on Sundays for mass. The light display and auditory accompaniment of Van Goghs letters made it a wonderful show. You can sit on chairs or lie on bean bags put on the floor. Employees are friendly and it is well worth going to see. Thank you Van Gogh and Rembrandt
100% worth it
The show was amazing! Very nice portrayal of Van Gogh and Rembrandts art, totally worth it! The show was about 40 minutes long, perfect duration. Shout out to Gustavo, super nice guy!
Amazing experience!
It was a amazing experience! The church was very special with the projection of moving pitcures en sound. With the best host: Gustavo!
Absolutely Amazing Experience
Absolutely fabulouse experience highly recommend. We managed to get the floor beanbags so it was also relaxing ... The location of the old church also added to the experience.
Amazing lights and sound
Absolutely wonderful experience, was in awe of the lights and sounds. It taking place in the church too made it even more mesmerizing! 10/10 would recommend, and Bruno was a star!
Beautiful Experience at the Van Gogh and Rembrandt Museums in amsterdam ✨️
The show was absolutely beautiful and inspiring — a true celebration of art and history. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout the visit. The overall atmosphere was calm and well-organized. One small suggestion: I would love to see more seating areas in the central spaces to relax and take in the art more comfortably. Highly recommended to anyone visiting Amsterdam — a must-see experience!
More restrictive than other immersive experiences, but if you are a Rembrandt or Van Gogh fan, still enjoyable!
We entered the darkened church sanctuary and had to find seats (choose from large cushions on the floor or church pews or chairs) not knowing what direction we would be looking. It was hard to hear the introduction since the speaker did not have a microphone. Once the program began, it seemed like images on one wall did not travel around 360 degrees. And depending on where you sit, you may have chandeliers and other infrastructure in your sightline. At times, it was a bit difficult to hear the words spoken during the program. Rembrandt was not as interesting or as colorful as Van Gogh (at least in his later years). I ended up just looking around and up to see what I could enjoy during the program. I did see a number of my favorite Van Gogh paintings, but have no idea how many different works were covered. The show lasted about 40 minutes. It was not as much fun as the other immersive experiences I've seen (where you can get up and move around), but it was still enjoyable!
Worth the visit if you have a ride!
Enjoyable! Set in an historic church both artists attended. Sound is a little garbled; visuals are like a panoramic slide show. Area is difficult to access via taxi.
Not when you are tired!
I was tired after long day of walking and there were mats on which I lay - this was a mistake. I initially started to dose. The imagery is cast on the ceiling and the walls. Lying on your back you have to crane your head around to see the walls as well. I wonder if it would have been better to have been seated? The sound, as I am a senior, was occasionally difficult to discern but overall mood was set and did impact the images. I am not certain that the value is there though at 17€ for 40min. On the other hand I do not regret spending time experiencing Van Gogh’s words while seeing his images.
Beautiful Experience
The atmosphere in this church was truly beautiful, and the production of the experience was top-notch. Our guide for the day, Gustavo, was fantastic. It's quite something to realise you're in the same church where both Rembrandt and Van Gogh once were (and that it's still an active church)! The unique touch of laying on bean bags in the church's center made it even more memorable. We found the experience to be very informative and thoroughly impressive. Definitely recommend a visit! Just be sure to wrap up warm, as it can be a little cold inside, which is understandable for such a large church
Colorfull Story
Lovely show, A wonderfull moment to simply enjoy a story and beautiful art. The colors and the sound bring you into the story.
Merciiiii
Incredible
The story was incredible. How the pictures were displayed felt like Van Gogh was there through his artwork. This is our last day in Amsterdam and it really made our final day feel special. Thank you to all the people who made the amazing display.
Amazing presentation
If you love Goya's art and want to experience it through the voices and photos it is an amazing experience to see it all come alive. I recommend it highly
Lovely experience
Very friendly staff it was enjoyable and a different way of looking at art. Really enjoyed the experience with a great summary of how Van Gough was inspired by Rembrandt.
Unlike anything I have done before!
This experience was incredible and nothing like I have ever experienced before! You are so immersed that you genuinely lose track of time. Would highly recommend.
booked by mistake, but loved the experience 😍 …
A Mesmerizing Journey Through Art at the Noorderkerk The Van Gogh and Rembrandt light performance at the Noorderkerk is a breathtaking tribute to two of the Netherlands' greatest artists. Located in the heart of the Jordaan, the historic church becomes a living canvas as stunning projections of Van Gogh’s vivid landscapes and Rembrandt’s evocative portraits illuminate its walls. Guided by the voice of a skilled narrator, the audience is taken on an intimate journey through the lives and works of these masters. The narration adds depth and context, weaving the stories behind the art into the immersive visual experience. The interplay of light, color, and storytelling creates a unique atmosphere, blending history and innovation within the awe-inspiring architecture of Noorderkerk. This performance is an unforgettable homage to Dutch artistic heritage, offering a fresh and engaging way to connect with the timeless genius of Van Gogh and Rembrandt. I loved it. A must-see for art lovers and anyone seeking a unique cultural experience in Amsterdam.
Amazing immersive experience and not to be missed!
Beautiful immersive way to enjoy learning about Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Gorgeous setting and wonderful video/music projected onto the church. I feel sad by the amount of negative reviews because the purchasers didn’t know what they were buying - this is no reflection on the experience and is user error. The website clearly states multiple times ‘we are not the Van Gogh museum’ so I don’t think they can do any more to avoid this happening. I would definitely recommend - I loved lying on the bean bags to watch the church transform in front of my eyes!
Wonderful experience
The show was amazing and breathtaking !! The images and the sound worked so well together. We enjoyed the whole show and the time flew away. The church as a place for this show was just the perfect spot. For us it was the perfect final of a great day in Amsterdam. It’s a beautiful way to come a little closer to the two artist Van Gogh and Rembrandt, even if you don’t enjoy standing in a museum and watching art the whole day.
Incredible virtual experience
The virtual art experience of Van Gogh and Rembrandt was absolutely stunning. The setting was both lovely and meaningful, creating a perfect backdrop for the works of these two iconic artists. The atmosphere was immersive, and the visuals were simply breathtaking, bringing their masterpieces to life in ways that felt both intimate and grand. What made this experience truly memorable was how well it conveyed the stories and legacies of these two famous local artists. Each piece seemed to speak not only of their genius but of the rich cultural heritage they left behind. The combination of stunning visuals, captivating storytelling, and an incredible atmosphere made this experience a beautiful tribute to Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Highly recommended for any art lover!
Amazing immersive art experience!
The MOST amazing experience! Absolute highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. Grab a bean bag on the floor, recline, and look up as the art and story are projected on the ceiling and walls. Staff did a great job. Go!
Art in immersive storytelling!
This is a must see experience. Cozy, immersive and a unique lens to art. It helps you get a peek into Van Gogh's mind and why Rembrandt inspired him as much as he did.
Informative and enjoyable visit to see this light display
Really enjoyed this light display. The setting was perfect to learn about these fabulous artists. It was held in a church and you had the choice to lie on the floor on beanbags or chairs. Very informative
Tolles Event
Great experience!
Great experience, different and beautiful. It would be better if there were different languages, and the sound is a bit low so it was difficult to understand.
Visual Excitement!
The visuals were great, it felt so surreal. The staff were super patient (I was 5 minutes late 🤭🤭) Definitely recommend!!
Immersive experience
A very cool experience linking the two great artists in a church we you are surrounded but their artwork screened onto the walls and ceiling. Music was emotive and the art stunning. Only downside is the audio which can be difficult to hear.
