Visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam

Good couple of hours worth
very enjoyable and informative couple of hours, not only paintings but interesting history too, learned lots I didn't know about the colonial past of the Netherlands
Excellent!
We booked tickets on a rainy day and are glad we went to this museum. It was fabulous to see so many beautiful pieces of art work and the restoration process going on with the Night Watch painting. Seeing the beautiful library was incredible. Remember to be quiet as you enter the area. The doll house collection is incredible with the details in each room. Highly recommend this museum if you get the chance. They have a nice gift shop in the museum area too.
Family tour was so much fun!
We booked the private family tour, and Hugo was absolutely amazing with my kids (ages 10 and 8). It was fun and interactive. We all learned so much, and he kept my kids engaged for a solid 1.5 hours in the museum, which is no easy feat. If you have kids, I highly recommend booking the family tour through the museum (far far in advance). And of course, it is a lovely museum with fabulous art and history to learn!
Must see in Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum
It was incredible to see so many paintings by world's best painters. Nearly too much for one visit, have to go again! An experience that nobody should miss.
Zeer noemenswaardig tentoonstelling Amerikaans fotografie
Prachtige foto tentoonstelling!!!
A beautiful museum with many works.
A very richly endowed museum with extraordinary collections spanning several centuries of the history of Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the former colonies. The building itself is superb. You will need at least half a day to appreciate the works on the museum's four levels. Visit at opening time to fully appreciate the paintings, sculptures and objects.
Artists amsterdam
Great location and large number of famous paintings. Great way to spend an afternoon. Very busy but easy to get to by bus..
Great time at the museum - Rijksmuseum
My mother & I love to travel but we are not keen on visiting museums. Netherlands has a lot of museums, so we decided to pick the ones we wanted to really see. Rijksmuseum was one that we got interested in after going through their website. We reached out to check if we could rent wheelchair & their response was no because wheelchairs are free to borrow! We thought we would spend about an hour or little over but we spent over three hours! There is so much to see. My mother loved the different tea/teapot collection, the ceramics, the locks & keys collection & I just loved how spacious it was. The staff are friendly & more than happy to guide you so you have the best time ever in a museum.
En självklar femma
Kan inte få något annat än betyget 5. Internationell klass!
Stunning building and works of art
Fabulous building full of treasures. It was great to be able to see the Surhc master work up close and a particular highlight to see the restoration work in Rembrandts Night Watch. Also fascinating were the miniature doll houses and the replica sailing ship. Well worth a visit!
A very large museum with lovely architecture.
The architecture is impressive and building is huge. Lots of exhibits and a very large area to cover. We selected the 9 am 1st lot and arrived early and was first in queue. Signage was not very clear where the entrances are. It is at a passageway that runs through the building. There is more than 1 entrance there. It was good to appreciate the paintings and exhibits in the first hour but the place began to fill up with visitors quite fast. Honestly, the museum is extremely big and one can take hours to slowly cover all the exhibits, depending on one’s interest. Allocate more time if you enjoy checking out all the exhibits. Tickets can be booked from the museum’s own website or from third parties. Download the app for free commentary about every exhibit. Need to use ear phones.
Majestic exhibition, even too big
This museum is so big and its collections are so diverse that they would probably benefit from being split. People who are interested in Rembrandt's painting do not necessarily want to know about eastern art and/or american photography (and vice versa). That said, all the works are so well classified that one doesn't need an audio guide (thus saving 6,50€). The biggest flaw of the main exhibition is how Rembrandt's masterpiece "The Night Watch" is exposed (i.e. behind a thick reflecting glass which prevents taking good pictures). Still a very good museum, mind you.
Put it on your Museum list.
Yep back after 20 years. Utilised Amsterdam card. Long queues outside. The wait was worth it. The redevelopment of the museum "wow". Only critism is poor signposting to lifts. After traveling early from Liverpool ability to do stairs was limited. The restaurant especially the new cake celebrating 750th anniversary of Amsterdam beautiful. The gift shop very expensive is only real negative.
Well woth visiting!
Wow...I wish I had more time. Allow a minimum of 2 hours...we stayed for 3 hours and saw about 70%. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Get the app and bring earbuds for a free 'tour.' Select paintings will have a number that you key into your app to get a deeper dive into the art you are viewing. By no means am I an art connoisseur, but this was a great museum.
A must for art lovers
An absolute myriad of paintings dating back to the 17th century. We got in for free on the Go City pass. Surprised by the fact that it was possible to go right up to each painting and take pictures. It’s possible to spend hours there. There’s a nice cafe so you can take a break at any time. Also a nice garden outside and a fun fountain you can get into the middle of.
Lovely Museum!
We loved our afternoon in this museum. I was not prepared for the sheer beauty of its paintings, Delft, doll houses and models! We certainly appreciate art but to think I could have missed this bothers me! There was a King’s Day crowd as we were there Friday before its official Saturday celebration and Amsterdam was crazy. Make sure this is on your list of must-do’s in Amsterdam. Lots of good help finding what we needed and kind people to help you!
Great Museum
Very impressive museum. Only drawback was a lack of signs indicating elevators and stairs. Large display of many great Dutch artists as well as ceramics, military guns, swords, ship models, etc.
Impressive and extensive museum
The Rijksmuseum is an impressive and extensive museum with a lot to see. From Dutch Masters like Rembrandt and Vermeer to an array of historical artifacts and beautifully curated exhibitions, the collection is both rich and varied. It's very well organized and presented, making the visit enjoyable and informative. You should definitely plan ahead and reserve enough time to explore everything — there's so much to take in that a quick visit wouldn't do it justice. Overall, a fantastic experience and a must-see if you're in Amsterdam.
Amazing museum!
We spent 4 hours visiting the museum from the bottom to the top floor and had a breakfast break in the museum's coffee shop, which serves plenty of delicious options. The museum itself is quite impressive, and the artwork is mesmerizing. The best part is the mobile app, created by the museum, which gives you free audio and visual tour, helps you navigate this massive museum with ease and learn more about selected paintings through the audio stories narrated in the app. Mandatory to book tickets in advance, online, the entrance gets sold out easily if you don't reserve your slot. Fabulous experience, highly recommended!
immensa
Great art museum
Great art museum. Very large. Plan a lot of time to get through everything. Expect crowds. Lots of great painting from artists like Van Gough and Goya. Well worth seeing. Make reservations ahead of time.
Ok
Nice but way too much to see and when the tour groups turn up…..good luck. The app tour guide is good but not many options to hear
A wealth of information
The museum came recommended to us and it was not hard to see why. We were not prepared for the size of it and the number of paintings by Dutch masters. Not being heavily into art, we chose to pay for the audio guides to add some flesh at what we were looking at, which was a good choice. The museum was very busy and given that the visit was in the week leading up to Kings day, we may well have to return so as to avoid the numbers of people but also allow much more time, as a few hours is just not enough to give the paintings the attention they deserve.
Essentiel
Lovely museum, rude guests
Lovely museum with variety of works by primarily Dutch artists. Can be tricky to navigate your way around. I do not understand why museums allow pictures to be taken of the art work. I am further perplexed that guests take selfies of art works. I was actually asked to move away from a painting I was studying so a person could take a selfie with it, and I lost it.
Enjoyed our visit
Rijksmuseum is located in a lovely building with easy access to the tram. It's a massive building with so many works of art including the Masters and Dutch history. We spent 6 hours there and couldn't possibly see everything. Save the cost of the audio guide and download the app - it's wonderful! Bring headphones/earbuds. From the app you are able to choose which works of art you want to see or simply follow the app for the 'highlights' tour... and that took us several hours. Get familiar with the app before going to the museum. Seating in galleries is available, but not always when you want it. Rembrandt's Night Watch painting is currently under restoration, but you are able to see it. The reproduction on the wall in the next room is easier to see. We did not take advantage of the cafe, but it was available. Entrance is via security checking bags. Book your tickets before you go to avoid disappointment. A few visitors were quite obnoxious literally walking right in front of us to get close up while we were viewing a painting from only a few steps away. We found some of the museum tour guides had little regard for visitors not in their tour group. They would go right up to paintings pointing out things to their group but being in the way of others just wanting to see a painting. Yes, it's a museum worth visiting - but expect crowds.
Worth
The collections in the museum were extremely impressive and extensive. Works of arts were from different eras. The Dolls houses and library were amazing. The delftware, William rex and Etienne-Maurice Falconet were some highlights in the museum also. Staffs were friendly and helpful. Definitely worth visiting at least 2 hours.
EXCELLENTE VISITE
I can't get over my fantastic visit to the Rijksmuseum!
I can't get over my fantastic visit to the Rijksmuseum! I haven't been to the museum in over ten years, as I was living in the United States at the time. However, I have recently visited many museums in the US, France, the UK, Greece, Turkey, and Italy. The new redesign is so well thought out and visitor-friendly. If I can compare it to, say, the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles, which I visited the month before. Though their art is exceptional (for example, Leonardo Da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa'), the user experience is often poor. You feel crammed, overwhelmed, claustrophobic and simply unloved. But the Rijksmuseum is the exact opposite - you feel like they care about you. I never felt hemmed in; I could spend as much time as I wanted looking at even the great masterpieces (like Rembrandt's 'Night Watch' or Vermeer's 'Milkmaid'), and there were plenty of seats for when I felt tired. It's testament to how great the museum is that my usually heavily distracted ADHD son was able to enjoy this museum for almost three hours. I can't say how impressed I am with the Rijksmuseum, which I will definitely visit again the next time I'm in Amsterdam.
Excelente exposición! La recomiendo ampliamente.
More restrictive than other immersive experiences, but if you are a Rembrandt or Van Gogh fan, still enjoyable!
We entered the darkened church sanctuary and had to find seats (choose from large cushions on the floor or church pews or chairs) not knowing what direction we would be looking. It was hard to hear the introduction since the speaker did not have a microphone. Once the program began, it seemed like images on one wall did not travel around 360 degrees. And depending on where you sit, you may have chandeliers and other infrastructure in your sightline. At times, it was a bit difficult to hear the words spoken during the program. Rembrandt was not as interesting or as colorful as Van Gogh (at least in his later years). I ended up just looking around and up to see what I could enjoy during the program. I did see a number of my favorite Van Gogh paintings, but have no idea how many different works were covered. The show lasted about 40 minutes. It was not as much fun as the other immersive experiences I've seen (where you can get up and move around), but it was still enjoyable!
Worth the visit if you have a ride!
Enjoyable! Set in an historic church both artists attended. Sound is a little garbled; visuals are like a panoramic slide show. Area is difficult to access via taxi.
Not when you are tired!
I was tired after long day of walking and there were mats on which I lay - this was a mistake. I initially started to dose. The imagery is cast on the ceiling and the walls. Lying on your back you have to crane your head around to see the walls as well. I wonder if it would have been better to have been seated? The sound, as I am a senior, was occasionally difficult to discern but overall mood was set and did impact the images. I am not certain that the value is there though at 17€ for 40min. On the other hand I do not regret spending time experiencing Van Gogh’s words while seeing his images.
Beautiful Experience
The atmosphere in this church was truly beautiful, and the production of the experience was top-notch. Our guide for the day, Gustavo, was fantastic. It's quite something to realise you're in the same church where both Rembrandt and Van Gogh once were (and that it's still an active church)! The unique touch of laying on bean bags in the church's center made it even more memorable. We found the experience to be very informative and thoroughly impressive. Definitely recommend a visit! Just be sure to wrap up warm, as it can be a little cold inside, which is understandable for such a large church
Colorfull Story
Lovely show, A wonderfull moment to simply enjoy a story and beautiful art. The colors and the sound bring you into the story.
Merciiiii
Incredible
The story was incredible. How the pictures were displayed felt like Van Gogh was there through his artwork. This is our last day in Amsterdam and it really made our final day feel special. Thank you to all the people who made the amazing display.
Amazing presentation
If you love Goya's art and want to experience it through the voices and photos it is an amazing experience to see it all come alive. I recommend it highly
Lovely experience
Very friendly staff it was enjoyable and a different way of looking at art. Really enjoyed the experience with a great summary of how Van Gough was inspired by Rembrandt.
Unlike anything I have done before!
This experience was incredible and nothing like I have ever experienced before! You are so immersed that you genuinely lose track of time. Would highly recommend.
booked by mistake, but loved the experience 😍 …
A Mesmerizing Journey Through Art at the Noorderkerk The Van Gogh and Rembrandt light performance at the Noorderkerk is a breathtaking tribute to two of the Netherlands' greatest artists. Located in the heart of the Jordaan, the historic church becomes a living canvas as stunning projections of Van Gogh’s vivid landscapes and Rembrandt’s evocative portraits illuminate its walls. Guided by the voice of a skilled narrator, the audience is taken on an intimate journey through the lives and works of these masters. The narration adds depth and context, weaving the stories behind the art into the immersive visual experience. The interplay of light, color, and storytelling creates a unique atmosphere, blending history and innovation within the awe-inspiring architecture of Noorderkerk. This performance is an unforgettable homage to Dutch artistic heritage, offering a fresh and engaging way to connect with the timeless genius of Van Gogh and Rembrandt. I loved it. A must-see for art lovers and anyone seeking a unique cultural experience in Amsterdam.
Amazing immersive experience and not to be missed!
Beautiful immersive way to enjoy learning about Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Gorgeous setting and wonderful video/music projected onto the church. I feel sad by the amount of negative reviews because the purchasers didn’t know what they were buying - this is no reflection on the experience and is user error. The website clearly states multiple times ‘we are not the Van Gogh museum’ so I don’t think they can do any more to avoid this happening. I would definitely recommend - I loved lying on the bean bags to watch the church transform in front of my eyes!
Wonderful experience
The show was amazing and breathtaking !! The images and the sound worked so well together. We enjoyed the whole show and the time flew away. The church as a place for this show was just the perfect spot. For us it was the perfect final of a great day in Amsterdam. It’s a beautiful way to come a little closer to the two artist Van Gogh and Rembrandt, even if you don’t enjoy standing in a museum and watching art the whole day.
Incredible virtual experience
The virtual art experience of Van Gogh and Rembrandt was absolutely stunning. The setting was both lovely and meaningful, creating a perfect backdrop for the works of these two iconic artists. The atmosphere was immersive, and the visuals were simply breathtaking, bringing their masterpieces to life in ways that felt both intimate and grand. What made this experience truly memorable was how well it conveyed the stories and legacies of these two famous local artists. Each piece seemed to speak not only of their genius but of the rich cultural heritage they left behind. The combination of stunning visuals, captivating storytelling, and an incredible atmosphere made this experience a beautiful tribute to Van Gogh and Rembrandt. Highly recommended for any art lover!
Amazing immersive art experience!
The MOST amazing experience! Absolute highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. Grab a bean bag on the floor, recline, and look up as the art and story are projected on the ceiling and walls. Staff did a great job. Go!
Art in immersive storytelling!
This is a must see experience. Cozy, immersive and a unique lens to art. It helps you get a peek into Van Gogh's mind and why Rembrandt inspired him as much as he did.
Informative and enjoyable visit to see this light display
Really enjoyed this light display. The setting was perfect to learn about these fabulous artists. It was held in a church and you had the choice to lie on the floor on beanbags or chairs. Very informative
Tolles Event
Great experience!
Great experience, different and beautiful. It would be better if there were different languages, and the sound is a bit low so it was difficult to understand.
Visual Excitement!
The visuals were great, it felt so surreal. The staff were super patient (I was 5 minutes late 🤭🤭) Definitely recommend!!
Immersive experience
A very cool experience linking the two great artists in a church we you are surrounded but their artwork screened onto the walls and ceiling. Music was emotive and the art stunning. Only downside is the audio which can be difficult to hear.
Impressive visuals
Such an incredible show! The visuals were so impressive and very friendly staff! I liked how you could take photos of the show as well.
Came here with my partner without pre-planning our visit and found that to be no problem. Upon queueing up we found out that there was an English show in an hour and a half and that we could come back for that show. When we got back, we bought the tickets without any issues, made our way inside the church and found a beanbag to lay down on. The whole experience took about 45min and was absolutely beautiful to watch. They tell you the (a small part of) life story of Van Gogh and how that intertwined with Rembrandt, how the paintings got to be as we know them today and the visuals really captivate the words that are spoken. The visuals in general are absolutely captivating and very peaceful. For some the show was so peaceful they even snoozed off. Which was quite hilarious to see. I do have to say that the seating availability isn't the greatest for the angle you need to be tilting your head to watch the show for a long time. If you have a beanbag you are definitely a lucky person, since many complained about their neck afterwards. Overall a good experience, would recommend this for the arts enthusiasts out there.
It was really lovely, different than other emerssive experiences I've had
Amazing!!! So worth it and so inspiring
An unique experience. A must when in Amsterdam.
It was a great experience. You can go even if your English is bad.
Super expérience je recommande
By mistake me, my wife and my baby girl have visited the Van Gogh x Rembrandt but honestly what an experience to have in Amsterdam. Bruno was super cool and has shared so much after the presentation too. Definitely if you are in Amsterdam you should pay them a visit!
Great experience, beautiful views and informative but not boring at all.
A magical experience from start to finish. I was wowed by every change of scène. You don't just get to see the art, you get to live in it
Great price and worth the visit.
My husband and I really enjoyed this experience. It was a great way to increase our basic knowledge of both artists while enjoying the visuals of their works projected in a place they met. The experience was immersive and cut you off from the outside world. While we were a few minutes late, the staff were accomodating and the experience was worth our time. Would recommend.
What a wonderful way to enjoy both artists stories and feel as if you’re in the painting. You can stand, sit or lie down on large pillows. My daughter and I happened upon this immersive experience, offered in Dutch and English. A 360 degree projection in De Noorderkerk. The staff were gracious and kind! I couldn’t have asked for a better serendipitous immersive art experience. I highly recommend and would see again. Tickets can be bought at the door.
Great venue and lovely helpful staff. Unique experience
Visited this exhibition and although had some trouble finding it it was well worth it. The staff were so helpful helping us find our way back to central train station. Amazing venue and insightful story told. The projections of the artists works were incredible. A fully emersive experience we would strongly recommend.
A unique experience
A unique experience with the famous paintings projected on the church ceiling and wall while you lie on bean bags to listen to the story behind them
Emotional & evocative.
I left with goosebumps, this was such a unique & touching experience. Feel blessed to have experienced it. Jus wonderful, it really made my holiday.
I wondered how it will be, the result for me is that I was very satisfied. Indeed, it is well done, both for images, Lights and sounds. I think I understand now better who is Rembrandt and I have to say that thanks to this show I also appreciate his paints...
An interesting take on same famous artists. Very comfortable seating and an all immersive viewing for 45 mins. If you want something a little different and not too much detail this is ideal. NB. You should know a little about the two and art before heading in.

Very nice environment , perfectly made installation! A lot of room for sitting. The old church keeps the vibe. And it is amazing to feel that Rembrandt and Van Gogh were in the same church sitting maybe on the same place. Both children and grandparents were in love. See more pictures and videos attached.
One of the best 3D projections experiences I have ever seen and a compelling story to go with it. We really enjoyed this production and the beautiful venue. Great attention to detail in the story, the visuals and a lovely soundtrack bring this entire experience to the next level. Highly recommended and, in my opinion, better than many other Rembrandt and Van Gogh Amsterdam attractions...
Gave experiance.
Beautiful and emotionally very touching! An absolute must for a real VanGogh fan! I also liked the overlays from paintings by both artists. And all this this presented in a beautiful very old church that both artists had visited during their time ! Stunning!♥️♥️♥️
absolut beeindruckend!
How the lives of these two Dutch (and the world's) masters intertwined in an absolutely breathtaking digital re-imagined storytelling. It's a must if you visit (or live) in Amsterdam. Highly recommended!!!
