Willet Holthuysen Museum
What was it like to live in one of Amsterdam’s most luxurious houses during the Netherlands’ Golden Age? The Willet Holthuysen Museum answers precisely that. This beautiful 17th-century mansion, located on the famous Herengracht canal, is a spectacular attraction that will give you a glimpse into the life of the super wealthy in one of Amsterdam’s most prestigious neighborhoods. The Willet Holthuysen Museum owes its name to Abraham Willet and Sandrina Louisa Geertruyda Holthuysen, who lived in the canal house from 1861 to 1895, and who later donated it to the city of Amsterdam along with its interior furnishings. The Willet Holthuysen Museum features original decorations and furniture from the era, as well as a collection of artworks by Dutch painter Jacob de Wit. A look inside the Willet Holthuysen Canal House Museum
The Willet Holthuysen Canal House Museum is an opportunity to see the luxurious lifestyle of the mansion’s last owners. It is the only canal house that’s open to the public which still preserves most of its original interior. It was opened a year after the death of Mrs. Willet-Holthuysen and has operated as a museum ever since. The beautiful dining room, elegant ballroom, magnificent bedrooms and lavish gardens are a window into an opulent past with a characteristic Louis XIII style. The kitchen of the Willet House features an impressive display of dining items from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a collection of fine blue and white Delftware porcelain. The large gardens at the back of the Willet Holthuysen Canal House Museum were reconstructed in 1972 in a French-style symmetrical design. The Willet Holthuysen Canal House Museum has several paintings by famous Dutch artists of the era, most notably those of Adriana Johanna Haanen and Jacob de Wit.
