Hop On Berlin

A great way to see all the sights of Berlin, the tour is nearly 3 hours long in one lap. There is an audio guide in several languages. You do get really close to all of the attractions. The bus driver was friendly and welcoming.

Great service, friendly staff and great views! Would recommend the Hop on Hop off bus as a great way to see Berlin. Be prepared though, the entire route is @2.5 hours long!

Brilliant.

Okay … I have just read the recent reviews and it would seem some individual(s) rated the Sight Seeing of Berlin (Hop On, Hop Off) as not particularly great. However, I have found my tour brilliant. Whilst the tour bus, was not particularly crowded. Claudes, the bus/tour guide, was exceptionally brilliant, so knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour. Appreciated his storytelling of why the Berlin Wall was built,; explained the Berlin Wall Museum and the drawings etc … we stopped twice for a 15 minute break. Claudes, spoke about the history of Berlin and it’s check points. It’s a shame, you can’t ask for Claudes, for your tour guide … he was & is brilliant 😊

Excellent tour guide

We purchased a ticket that gave us a 48 hour pass with guided walking tour and free curry wurst. The directions to activate your ticket were not great, nor was information on redeeming your curry wurst. However the actual tour bus was great. The first driver we had was entirely unhelpful but the other ones were excellent. Also the sellers and agents around the mail stops were super helpful. The English guy we had for the walking tour was hilarious and very knowledgeable. He really did an excellent job.

Fahrt mit Klaus - absolute Empfehlung!

Ich selbst habe einige Jahre in Berlin gewohnt und habe noch Verwandtschaft dort. Wenn ich nun zu Besuch in Berlin bin und Rundfahrten buche, wähle ich City Sightseeing Berlin quasi aus Gewohnheit. Dieses Mal jedoch bin ich so dermaßen überzeugt, dass ich sogar eine Bewertung schreibe. Das liegt an Klaus. Klaus ist der Busfahrer, der uns an unserem zweiten Tag durch Berlin begleitete. Wir hatten das 48-Stunden Ticket gebucht, da wir damit rechneten, dass am 03.10. bestimmt einige Demos und Kundgebungen unsere Rundfahrt "stören" würden (was dann ja auch so war). Wir stiegen zu Klaus in den Bus und bekamen eine very special Rundfahrt. Das Wetter war kühl und windig, so dass das Dach eh geschlossen war. Also blieben wir im unteren Bereich. Klaus ist das komplette Gegenteil vom kaltschnäuzigen Berliner. Er begrüßte jeden neuen Fahrgast sehr persönlich (obwohl er die Menschen ja noch gar nicht kannte!) und souverän in diversen Sprachen. Jeder fühlte sich willkommen. Falls jemand filmbegeistert ist: wartet auf Klaus. Er weiß genau, welche Filme wo in Berlin gedreht wurden (aktuell: Tribute von Panem). Wir haben auf dieser Tour so viel mitbekommen, was nicht in den Kopfhörer-Ansagen erwähnt wurde! Meine (19jährige) Tochter hat angekündigt, dass sie auf ihrer nächsten Berlin-Reise nur noch mit Klaus fahren möchte. Wir haben tatsächlich einige Stopps, an denen wir eigentlich aussteigen wollten, ausgelassen, um weiter mit Klaus zu fahren (und haben sie dann später erlaufen). Achtet darauf, in welchen Bus Ihr einsteigt: die Hör-Texte des Kooperationspartners sind zwar natürlich ebenfalls informativ, aber sehr nüchtern und unpersönlich. Vielleicht kann man das mal anpassen? Wir stiegen um 17h in einen Bus am KaDeWe ein, dessen Fahrer uns dann mitteilte, dass er nur noch bis zum Potsdamer Platz führe (zwei Stationen). Bisschen irreführend, wenn es heißt, dass der nächste Bus um 17h kommt - wir waren davon ausgegangen, dass der Bus dann dann noch einmal die komplette Runde fahren würde. Zumal andere Unternehmer offenbar länger unterwegs waren (wir haben die Busse der Konkurrenz deutlich später noch gesehen). Trotzdem und ganz deutlich: absolute Empfehlung für die Tour mit Klaus. Für den Kooperationspartner spreche ich ganz deutlich keine Empfehlung aus. Es kam kein Hinweis, dass die gebuchte Strecke gesperrt war und ein Hinweis auf möglicherweise auf möglicherwiese veränderte Routen fehlte ebenfalls. Auf einem Teilstück waren auch die Kopfhörerbuchsen offenbar kaputt. Auf unseren Hinweis erhielten wir vom Fahrer (nicht Klaus!) ein eher unfreundliches: "Det passiert". Klaus ist für uns ein absolutes Argument für diese Tour mit diesem Unternehmen. Ich weiß jetzt, warum es in Berlin überall diese überirdischen Rohre gibt (die ich bisher für misslungene Kunstinstallationen gehalten habe) und ich weiß, wo es den Schacht gibt, der der Stasi damals die Spionage des Alex ermöglichte. Und: Klaus, falls du das liest: natürlich waren wir noch in den Hackeschen Höfen! Liebe Grüße von Natalie (die mit dem interessanten Pulli) und der Mutter!

The bus ride was a great way to see the city and listen to someone tell us about all the highlights of what we were seeing. Super easy to hop on and off. The boat tour was nice but we didn’t understand anything said since it wasn’t in English…but it was still a nice ride.

A good overview of Berlin

Read a few poor reviews but have to say ours was a good experience. Talked to a few of the ticket sellers as they lower their prices as you move around. We were happy with the price we paid. We enjoyed the banter on the commentary and have little to complain about. This company pairs up with another so there's more choice of buses at each stop. There is a negative in that there are no *bus stops* so you have to remember where you got off. We bought tickets and boarded where there were ticket sellers. That helped, but they're not at every stop. One other gripe was other tourists chatting loudly so we couldn't hear the commentary. Overall, a great way to see the highlights of Berlin.

Absolut empfehlenswert

Von Herzen ein grosses Dankeschön für diese Möglichkeit. Meine Schwiegermutter (85) war fasziniert von der Stadt und kaum aus dem Staunen nicht mehr heraus, wie gross Berlin doch ist. Für eine 85jährige ein absolutes Highlight, da sie nichts erlaufen musste und die Stadt sitzend geniessen konnte. Die Streckenführung war super. Die Stopps in der Stadt gut gewählöt und zentral. Die Häufigkeit der Busfrequenz war sehr praktisch und mit max 20min hat man stets Zeit, sich kurz die Beine zu vertreten und/oder ein Getränk zu kaufen. Der Bus war super sauber, das Personal professionell und super freundlich. Der Service während der Fahrt informativ und excellent. Unser Platz oben und in der Sonne war perfekt. Eine absolute Empfehlung!

Handy tour bus quite frequent

Tour bus handy - right outside our hotel at East Side Gallery stop! Bought 2 day ticket for extra 4 euros which was worth it. They let you use red hop on and hop off bus as well as the red city sightseeing bus so both were quite frequent. Did full tour took 2 hours but bus does stop as major sights for 15 mins during that time ie Brandenburg gate and also at stop 1. Detailed recorded tour although sometimes it continues even when you are at red lights so unsure what its referring too but still informative. There was a boat ride but we couldnt find where to pick this up from so ended up doing a separate boat tour on Reederei Hadynski which was very good. Bus was clean and soft drinks available but you need cash as card machine didnt work.

A great way to see central Berlin

I traveled to Berlin for a day trip with my son and therefore needed the ability to see as many of the sights in a short space of time and this tour ticked the box. We booked the combined tour and one hour river trip in advance and when we got to the central station it was really easy to find the bus stop, number 19 on the list. As one can imagine the bus was quite full but we managed to get upstairs seats and had great 360 views. A downside, not worth marking down was that the initial Jack for the headphones was as faulty but the next one did. The circular tour takes 2.5 hours if one stays on but the clue is in the name so we hopped off for the river cruise before getting back on at a different stop to get back to the station. The guided information adds humour to interesting facts. Well worth using to understand Berlin

Wir haben die negativen Bewertungen gelesen und können sie in keinster Weise nachvollziehen. Der Fahrer war nett und freundlich, konnte auch Fragen beantworten. Für die mangelnden Sehenswürdigkeiten in Kiel kann der Fahrer sicht nichts, im Gegenteil. Er hat versucht alles positiv zu erzählen.

Excelente museo

Visita realizada en Noviembre de 2019. Un excelente museo sobre la vida en la RDA, los coche, la vida cotidiana, la cultura, los telediarios y versiones de las casas típicas del Berlín del Este. Aunque es un poco caro, merece mucho la pena, está muy bien para comprender el pasado de la ciudad y te lo pasas bien, te puedes allí unas cuantas horas.

A mixed bag but a must for history fans

A tricky one to review as it is a really interesting period in German history and as a history fan I am glad we went. But I can see the reasons why it doesn’t review as well as other Berlin attractions - it can get crowded; the layout can be a bit confusing; and some of the interactive elements can feel a bit gimmicky (lots are just flaps with writing inside). This museum isn’t sure what it wants to be and is trying too hard to appeal to families and kids when the text content is clearly aimed at adults (perhaps teens and students as well, but not young children). The highlights for me are the recreated rooms in the East Germany style, and the plethora of items and artefacts from the era.

Really interesting and fun museum

This is a really interesting and quite fun museum to visit. There is a lot of information available about life in the DDR and how it compared to life in the rest of Berlin & Germany. There are some really fun mock-ups of sitting rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms etc in a typical apartment in the DDR and you can listen to music from the period. The museum is quite big and there is a lot to take in, but the information is presented really clearly and is very easy to follow. I had a really good time visiting this museum and I would definitely recommend it to others!

Everything you need to know about the DDR

This museum documents the life and times of people who lived in the DDR. As you progress through the museum it tells how the country came into existence and gives an insight into how the people lived there. It covers all aspects of life; employment, housing, health, social, political…quite literally everything to do with life in the DDR The museum is very interactive with a huge amount of information to absorb. There is also a vast amount of genuine artefacts on display. We spent around 2 hours visiting the museum. The shop at the end was fantastic, it has a lot of niche items on sale that I didn’t see in any other places that I visited in Berlin. Even if you don’t have time to visit the museum, I’d recommend a trip to the shop.

Wir waren vom DDR-Museum begeistert. Obwohl ich schon einiges über den Staat gewusst hatte, konnte ich mein Wissen hier noch vertiefen. Auch für Museumsmuffel und Kinder lohnt sich der Besuch, da es viel zum Anfassen resp. Ausprobieren gibt. Besonders gefallen haben uns der Trabi-Simulator und die nachgebaute Wohnung im DDR-Stil. Zeitbedarf: 1-2 Stunden je nach Interesse.

Das DDR-Museum in Berlin, idyllisch im Museumsviertel direkt an der Spree gelegen, gehört zu den spannendsten und lebendigsten Museen der Stadt. Schon beim Betreten wird klar: Hier geht es nicht nur ums Anschauen, sondern ums Erleben. Besonders beeindruckend ist die vollständig eingerichtete DDR-Wohnung, in der man Zimmer für Zimmer erkunden kann. Die originalgetreue Möblierung, Haushaltsgeräte und Alltagsgegenstände vermitteln ein sehr authentisches Bild davon, wie Menschen in der DDR tatsächlich gelebt haben. Man fühlt sich fast, als wäre man zu Besuch bei einer Familie der 1970er oder 1980er Jahre. Ein echtes Highlight ist der Trabbi-Simulator, in dem man selbst hinter dem Steuer des legendären Fahrzeugs Platz nehmen kann — ein Erlebnis, das sowohl Spaß macht als auch Geschichte greifbar werden lässt. Überhaupt überzeugt das Museum durch seine vielen interaktiven Stationen: Schubladen öffnen, Dinge anfassen, hören, ausprobieren — hier wird Geschichte lebendig statt nur ausgestellt. Darüber hinaus beleuchtet das Museum nicht nur das private Leben, sondern auch Themen wie Schule, Arbeit, Freizeit, Überwachung durch die Staatssicherheit und den Alltag im sozialistischen System. Diese Mischung aus persönlichen Einblicken und politischem Kontext macht den Besuch besonders informativ und berührend. Unser heutiger Besuch hat sich absolut gelohnt. Das Museum vermittelt auf eindrucksvolle Weise, wie das Leben in der DDR wirklich war — jenseits von Klischees, nah am Menschen und verständlich für jede Generation. Sowohl für Zeitzeugen als auch für jüngere Besucher ist es ein faszinierender Ort, der Geschichte begreifbar macht. Es wird auch ein Eintrittsgeld erhoben. Für Schwerbehinderte Personen ist eine Ermäßigung auf den Eintrittspreis verfügbar. Kreditkartenzahlung ist auch möglich. Das Personal war sehr nett und freundlich sowie auch hilfsbereit. Ein Besuch im DDR-Museum ist daher uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen — spannend, lehrreich und überraschend unterhaltsam zugleich.

Ein wirklich sehr gut aufbereitetes Museum über die Geschichte der DDR mit spannenden Exponaten. Vor allem die Nachbildungen der Stasi Verhörräume und der Räume aus der Platte. Nicht zu vergessen ein Originaltrabant.

Prix excessif ( 13,50€/p)

Petit musée qui retrace la vie en RDA des années 50 à 1989. De belles et bonnes explications, très instructives. Mais lors de fortes fréquentations , le musée s'avère trop étroit. Pas de pièces de collection à forte valeur, c'est plus un espace ludique que musée. Mais il faut avoir vu.

Eine interessante Zeitreise

Das Museum hat viel interessante Darstellungen, vor allem, wenn man selber als 14 Jähriger einmal in Berlin zur DDR zeit war erkennt man vieles wieder. Es gibt viel Videoecken, wo man bestimmte Aspekte nochmal anschauen kann. Toll ist auch der Aufzug, und andere Nachbildungen, die sehr realistisch sind.

The DDR (Deutsche Democratic Republic - East German) Museum is a retro mind trip!! It shows what life was like for the typical East German. The housing, living standards, sample of a typical flat, youth camps, equality for woman at the work place, Stasi (secret police) monitoring, etc, etc. The government tried to control the message via publications, news casts, & work announcements. The purpose was to sell the Communist manifesto (with limited success). If you failed to tow the line, there were consequences!! The museum is just to the west of the Museum Island on the Main Street of Berlin. Most Hop-On business have a nearby stop. Also, close to the Museum Island U-Bahn train stop. Alexanderplatz is just a 10 minute walk to the west and the Brandenburg Gate is just to the east. A must See for Cold War history buffs.

A quirky museum about life in East Germany

Certainly a little unusual. Multiple themes are presented, such as sports in the DDR, what an apartment looked like, life in the military, spying on the citizens, and so on. A suggested route to follow would have helped, as there are a large number of exhibits and they aren’t in any particular order. A Trabant is on display and includes a driver simulation. I felt I understood how East Germans lived better after my visit.

Ich hatte keinerlei Kontakte in die DDR und kenne daher nur wenige Details über das Leben dort. Ich glaube aber das man hier eine sehr realistischen Eindruck bekommt. Wir fanden es auch sehr neutral gehalten. Also keine subjektiven Bewertungen der Macher. Sehr gut auch das man über was drücken darf, Schubladen öffnen kann usw. Piccolo ma denso e molto interattivo questo museo ci trasporta nella DDR: molto interessante

Piccolo ma densissimo, il DDR Museum è tra i più interattivi di Berlino. Qui non si guarda soltanto: si tocca, si apre, si prova. Puoi sederti su un divano tipico degli anni ’70 della Germania Est, sfogliare vecchi giornali, o persino infilarti in una vera Trabant, la celebre auto della DDR. Il museo ha ricostruito un intero appartamento-tipo dell’epoca socialista, e tra gli oggetti originali si trovano anche prodotti contraffatti usati per imitare quelli dell’Ovest. È un tuffo autentico in un mondo che non esiste più, ma che ha segnato profondamente la storia tedesca.

Toller Einblick in eine vergangene Zeit

Super interessant uns spannend aufgemacht. Nicht sonderlich groß, aber trotzdem sehr informativ. Vor allem der Trabbi zum Einsteigen hat uns gut gefallen wie auch dir voll eingerichtete Wohnung.

Mais non c’était comme ça que les gens vivaient ?

Musée super intéressant. Avec plein d’information! N’hésitez pas à le visiter. Cela nous replonge dans la période de la guerre froide. Les informations sont très visuelles et il est facile de les comprendre , autant pour les petits que pour les grands. PS: prenez l’ascenseur ;)

Leerzaam en interactief

Ik vond het een leerzaam museum dat op toegankelijke wijze een inkijkje biedt in het bizarre dagelijkse leven in Oost-Duitsland, van de grauwe blokkendozen tot de indoctrinatie op school en de nogal eenzijdig gevulde keukenkastjes. Zeker voor mensen die die tijd meegemaakt vanuit het westen heel interessant

Great exhibition- at a quiet time

Firstly follow the advice of many reviewers and go at very start or end of day. We went at 6pm and bit busy at start but soon cleared out and we were able to look at all the exhibition very easily. In busy times you are going to struggle with this. Enjoyed all the information very much- flat decorated, car driving, sports section, prison cell etc.

Interaktives und spannendes Museum

Wir hatten da mit der Klasse einer Führung. Es war sehr gut und spannend! Besonders gefallen hat mir die Wohnung. Der Museum war interaktiv und interessant gestaltet.

Ottimo museo interattivo!

Questo interessante museo si trova in zona centrale, in un lato del fiume Sprea. Il museo tratta la storia di Berlino durante la divisione Est-Ovest. Il museo è interattivo e divertente, potrai guidare in un simulatore una classica auto dell'unione sovietica, o vedere come erano le case nelle due parti della città. Vengono raccontate storie ed aneddoti. Non è tra le principali attrazioni della capitale tedesca ma sicuramente merita una visita. Interessante!

Museo sorprendente: la vita di ogni giorno nella DDR!

Museo sorprendente. In poco tempo fornisce una idea significativa della vita quotidiana nella DDR famigliare e sociale; delle principali tappe politico/economico/sociali della DDR. Consiglio anche il catalogo guida. Fatto benissimo. Davvero notevole. Menzione particolare per il simulatore di guida della Trabant! Vale da solo il prezzo del biglietto.

Museo pieno di documenti e oggetti vari della vita nella Repubblica Democratica Tedesca. Ci si fa un'idea di come si viveva nella DDR. Il museo non è grande e un pò "disordinato" ma molto interessante

A must-visit in Berlin

If anyone has the slightest interest in the German Democratic Republic, then DDR museum is the place to go. Visitors there are provided with a very insightful picture regarding history, politics and social life in East Germany. There are also many interactive points that add to the whole experience. I would also recommend to buy the official book of the exhibition. I have to note, however, that the museum space is rather limited. When there are many visitors, the place becomes really crowded.

Museo molto bello e molto ben fatto. Adatto sia a piccoli che adulti per via dei molti pannelli da leggeri insieme agli oggetti d’epoca tra cui molti interattivi. Se sei studente 8€ e ne vale la pena.

Interessante, ti fa vedere come vivevano al di là del muro. In centro, dietro il Duomo quindi anche comodo da inserire in un itinerario giornaliero.

informative and interactive

Just returned for this museum. Was packed full of information and very interactive. Unfortunately the interactive layout does make the museum feel cramped at times (especially on a windy sunday morning in August). I’d recommend going early or during the week for a quieter experience. There’s something for everyone here and you could easily spend a good couple of hours here. I study history at university and found it all super interesting. I will likely return when next in Berlin!

Very educational, excellent presentation.

Very educational museum, with excellent presentation. The mock apartments etc really bring the old East to life. There is a lot of detail here and you could learn a lot if you are prepared to spend some time here. Good facilities, with a small shop and friendly staff. The location is also good, very central with lots to see and do in the locality, and places to eat. Don't forget to watch the German language series "Kleo' to get in the zone. Another plus is that unlike the old East Germany you can actually leave when you have had enough! Paul Jonsson, Woking, UK.

Interessant en interactief museum

Een leuk interactief museum om je onder te dompelen in de tijd van de DDR. Van een badkamer uit de tijd van de DDR tot een spel waarbij je kunt ervaren hoe het is om een autofabrikant te zijn in de planeconomie. Leuk museum, wel al snel vol en bij grote hitte geen aanrader.

DDR alla portata di tutti!

Museo ampiamente pubblicizzato, in posizione super strategica e centralissima ( di fianco al Duomo, di fronte agli imbarchi dei battelli sulla Sprea), sicuramente attrazione popolare adatta a tutti( sopratutto ragazzini in cerca di un diversivo all'isola dei Musei), molto interessante e accattivante per la quantità e varietà di stimoli, informazioni e allestimenti interattivi e multimediali a disposizione, unico neo: troppa gente! Dopo un po' , anche a causa dell'ambiente angusto e claustrofobico, tiviene boglia di fuggire! Peccato, bastava scegliere un ambiente più spazioso.

This museum is exceptional ! It is both attractive to children and interesting ! I highly recommend it. The only downside is that, the museum is in German and does not offer several translations ! Thank you for the experience spent in the museum ! 🤩

Klein, leerzaam, interactieve museum

Wat een leuk museum, erg leerzaam en toch ook veel herkenbare dingen gezien. Trabant was erg leuk, kamers ingericht uit de DDR tijd. Aanrader als je in Berlijn bent. Museum is erg klein en geen airco dus ga niet op warme dagen.

A good experience

My family and I spend a couple of hours at the DDR museum. We had a very good time there! although the place was a bit crowded, people were patience and waited for their turn peacefully. There is much to see and read, but you don't have to read it in a certain order. The museum shows different aspects of the historic period.

Te veel te zien voor een klein museum. Het onderwerp verdient een ruimer museum.

Interessant museum. Te veel te zien op kleine oppervlakte. Te druk daardoor. Jammer later waren er minder scholieren en was het aangenamer. Het museum geeft een goede indruk over hoe het was.
