Artis Royal Zoo + Micropia
The Artis Royal Zoo in Amsterdam is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. Located in the east part of the city center, this unique zoo has a large diversity of animals and plants and includes 27 historical buildings. The Artis Royal Zoo is not just a regular zoo: it also contains an aquarium, an insectarium, and a planetarium. But perhaps most unique to the Artis Royal Zoo is its newest addition: Micropia. This is the world’s first and only museum of microscopic life, and a state-of-the-art, multimedia attraction that is as fascinating as it is educational. Even though the Artis Royal Zoo and the microbe exhibition are located on the same premises, tickets are normally sold separately. Fortunately, you can now buy a combination ticket and enjoy a great discount on both attractions!
Artis Royal Zoo
Since it opened its doors to the public in 1851, the Artis Royal Zoo has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. This beautiful Amsterdam zoo is home to more than 700 species of animals including giraffes, crocodiles, elephants and orangutans. The grounds of the Artis Royal Zoo are also a botanical garden with over 200 types of exotic and local flora. Furthermore, the Artis Royal Zoo has a butterfly pavilion, an insectarium, an aquarium and even a planetarium!
Micropia is the world’s first and only museum of microbes. It offers a high-tech, immersive multimedia experience that will let you enter the realm of the normally unseen. Modern microscopes, interactive displays, and state-of-the-art equipment will be available for you to learn about the world of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, yeasts and algae. Micropia aims to be as exciting, engaging and educational as possible, with lots of fun interactive exhibitions designed with both children and adults in mind. Micropia is definitely a must-see attraction!
