The Dutch and their cheese are well known around the world and now you can experience how the cheese was made and sold back in the middle ages with the Alkmaar Cheese Market & Windmills tour. We take you back in time to the traditional cheese market of Alkmaar.
When a trader bought cheese, the carriers would bring the round cheeses in their unique way to the warehouse in Alkmaar. This warehouse is called “The Waag“ and is located in a 14th century building, where the cheese is weighted.
The carriers are members of one of the four guild’s and their technique and competition are a marvellous sight to see. The sight of hundreds of cheeses stacked on the brick paved square brings you back to a time long gone.
After the walking tour with an experienced guide, whom will tell you more about striking Alkmaar and its past, we go to “Schermerhorn”. This town is famous for its three old windmills in the idyllic polder landscape.
We will visit one of the windmills, here you can admire the early technique of water management from the Golden Age. By doing this, the Dutch built successfully on their future. This unique technique elicits sometimes the statement; "God created heaven and earth, but the Dutch created Holland".
