Five famous Amsterdam coffee shops

Last time we covered the topic of Amsterdam coffee shops, we discussed some frequently asked questions and other useful information. Now we’re taking a look at some of the most famous and internationally acclaimed Amsterdam coffee shops!

The Bulldog

The Bulldog was the first coffee shop in Amsterdam (it opened all the way back in 1975), setting the example for the rest of the Amsterdam coffee shops to follow. The original one, which is still there, opened in the Red Light District on Oudezijds Voorburgwal 90. It has since then expanded into multiple other locations in the city including a hotel, and also (warning: fun fact) has its own energy drink brand.

Barney’s Coffeeshop

Barney’s Coffeeshop is just a five-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, located on the lively Haarlemmerstraat and housed in a 500-year-old building. Friendly service and outstanding décor make it one of the best coffee shops in Amsterdam.

Dampkring

One of the most spacious, stylish and well-maintained Amsterdam coffee shops, Dampkring is popular with tourists as well as locals. It’s near the Torture Museum and the floating flower market Bloemenmarkt. Another fun fact: it was also featured in the movie Ocean’s 12.

Green House Centrum

This Amsterdam coffee shop is located at the heart of the Red Light District and right next to a canal. It has a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, and a decent menu—should you suddenly feel inexplicably hungry.

Grey Area

Despite being one of the smallest Amsterdam coffee shops, Grey Area has made a big name for itself. It’s known for its specialty cannabis strains and been visited by celebrities like Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Willie Nelson and many others.

That concludes this week’s picks, although with over 250 coffee shops in Amsterdam we might just have to make another list in the future. So keep an eye on our blog if you enjoyed this article!

One last tip: download a map of Amsterdam

Most of these Amsterdam coffee shops have a central location within walking distance from Amsterdam Central Station. However, with so many bridges, alleys, irregular streets and canals it can be easy to get lost. Therefore, we highly recommend you download a map of Amsterdam on your smartphone, so you don’t get lost trying to find them. See all coffee shops on a map of Amsterdam and choose the one nearby!
