Nieuwe Kerk – We Have a Dream

Visit the new exhibition in the Nieuwe Kerk called We Have a Dream. It showcases world-famous people who’ve had a big influence on history: Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela. People who all were leaders of extraordinary movements against racial discrimination and social injustice. All three of them became role models, but they also drew fierce criticism and opposition. Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King were even assassinated. The exhibition lets you discover how one person’s ideas can change the world and what experiences in their lives made them into the inspirational people they were/are.

The New Church Amsterdam

The New Church in Amsterdam is known for its high-profile exhibitions about art, photography and inspiring individuals and cultures. But the New Church Amsterdam itself is also an impressive historical monument. It was built at the beginning of the 15th century. Many Dutch naval heroes are buried in the Nieuwe Kerk, including Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, Commodore Jan van Galen, and Jan van Speyk. A fire almost destroyed the church in 1645, but it was rebuilt again in Gothic style. The New Church Amsterdam is no longer in use for church services, but it is used for Dutch royal investiture ceremonies, most recently that of the King of the Netherlands Willem-Alexander. It is also used for royal weddings, like that of Willem-Alexander and Maxima.
