Worth the visit
The museum is dedicated to educating about Van Gogh - his life, relationships, and contemporaries. It is well laid out and contains several key originals including The Almond Tree and Sunflowers. Also a few self portraits. It is interesting to learn that Van Gogh didn't start painting until age 27 and died 10 years later. An enjoyable way to spend several hours.

Great experience- book in advance!
Well worth a visit. Book early or you won’t get in. It’s a time slot system - which is good for keeping numbers manageable and allowing you to get close enough to see everything. Plenty of other things to see and do around the whole museumplein area with other museums, stalls and street food with seating nearby. For coffee or breakfast go to Blush across the road, just beside the tram stop. It’s a number 2 or 12 tram from the front of central station

Nice
This was a large building and felt too big for what was there. I loved that they had there famous paintings there that I recognized. It was nice inside. It is by other museums. They had a nice sized gift shop with lots of options.

Well Designed Van Gogh Art Museum!
A great treasure of all Van Gogh’s paintings! Highly recommend taking the audio tour to get more detailed description of all his popular paintings! We booked our entry time at 9am which was amazing to get in before the crowd! Very well designed art museum!

Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam
Exceptional museum! I was able to enjoy pieces I have never seen before. As with any popular site I recommend purchasing tickets in advance and aiming to arrive at first opening to avoid the crowds. One thing I did not appreciate was the locker system. You enter a code (very publicly) It is an interesting system, never seen one like it, there are certainly benefits to most of the system...but the way you add your code I did not find secure/safe because others can very easily see what your code is.

Van Gogh in Context
Museum presents the career on Van Gogh in context with his contemporaries and his legacy. Many famous paintings are shown.

Well organized and informative
This museum is really well done. It tells the story of this unique artist and his struggles through his art and also unveils how he became a household name. The rooms flowed and kept the crowds moving. The audio guide was very informative and I recommend getting it.

Worth the Cost of Admission
Amazing! Well done! Worth the cost of admission. Make sure to make your reservation as soon as tickets are available. We saw hundreds of people turned away while we waited for our timed entrance. We did the audio tour. It was worth the additional cost and really well done. It helped to guide you in the galleries. We took 2+ hours to get through the main collection. We could have used an additional hour to see the temporary exhibit. There were lockers to hold your belongings.

Worth it but come first thing in am
The collection is excellent though his most famous piece, Starry Night, isn’t here. The museum is organized nicely and does a great job of telling the story and history of VVG. Recommend buying the audio guide and buying tickets ahead of time for the first slot in the morning. We came at 10:30 on a Tuesday in April, and it was very crowded. So crowded that it impacted our enjoyment. You will be bumped, and you will get frustrated by the number of private tours talking loudly in front of the paintings. This isn’t a place for a leisurely, contemplative stroll.

Worth a Visit
Worth a visit. It gets very crowded and only a few places to sit down. There are lots of paintings to look at, the audio guide is very helpful. Younger children may get bored. Takes at least 3 plus hours to get round.

Perhaps they need etiquette guides for visitors
So crowded, with very few places to rest & sit down if you have young children who get tired easily. Some children were sitting on the floor but with adults who basically trampled over them. Some visitors are so eager to get their perfect photos / selfies their behaviour verges on the absurd / parody. Staff were unfailingly friendly & helpful. They really should have a drinking water fountain though & more seating area. The permanent collection was good when the crowds thinned out but the real star of the show was Matthew Wong’s exhibit. The audioguide was thought provoking and moving. It made me find out more about this artist I’d never heard of before.

Great museum
I had just finished a fiction book about Van Gogh so it was lovely to actually see some of the paintings mentioned in the book. This doesn’t have all his paintings, but I really enjoyed a more personal look at the artist. I was able to borrow a wheelchair since I am on crutches and that made everything accessible. It did get crowded but was able to see it all.

Fascinating facts about Van Gogh with many artworks
Going on a Friday night you get some unexpected extras of yoga sessions and movement to bongs. The museum follows the Life of Van Gogh through the three floors and what was going on in his life at the time of painting. A fascinating look at the different styles of work from flowers landscapes still life portraits and Japanese style. It shows was a tortured soul Van Gogh was but had the constant support of his brother

A fabulous experience
I went to the Van Gogh Museum with a bit of trepidation as I'm not the world's biggest Van Gogh fan and I feared it would just be overload. My nervousness was not helped by the first room you come across being a series of self-portaits that kind of played into that overload concern. However, after that the collection developed into the most fabulous experience. There are of course many of Van Gogh's works, and some of them it has to be said are magnificent, but I really loved the focus on the realists that influenced him, his contemporaries and those who followed him. By the time you get to the second floor it's just banger after banger, such that the great exchange of self-portraits by Gauguin and Bernard are tucked away in a corner with hardly anyone looking at them. There are too many highlights to mention, but suffice to say that by the end I was much more in love with Vincent's work and sad that there wasn't another floor to see. I went on a Friday evening when it's late opening and spent from 6.00 till 9.00 there. I'm not sure it is always the same but there was an enormous queue to get into the Stedelijk next door but you could walk straight into the Van Gogh Museum. The staff were friendly at the entrance and even though I had a timed ticket they didn't seem to worry about whether you were early or late. There was a temporary exhibition of Matthew Wong's work on the ground floor, which I have to say doesn't seem very well coordinated with the Stedelijk who have their own large Wong exhibition on at the same time and that really is overload. It's worth going through though as it doesn't cost any extra and this is where they've put Van Gogh's 'Bedroom in Arles' on display. Finally, I'd advise leaving your coat in the free lockers as you enter as it got very warm inside the gallery even though it was a cold evening outside.

Mixed feeling about this museum
I have mix feeling about my visit to this museum. While there are some great things about it was also a bit disappointing. Firstly you cannot bring bags into the museum (fully understand) and the locker system is really good. When you purchase your ticket online, which I did in advance add the audio tour. I strong recommend doing this as it is a wealth of information. The museum is set over 4 floors, you access the first via escalators and the rest via stairs. These stairs were starting to get a bit congested while I was there. Even though I had tickets for 9.30 the museum was already busy and I dread to think what it is like in high season. If you cannot handle the stairs there are two elevators which do get busy. There are a few places to sit but these get taken very quickly. The paintings are arranged in sections including his self portraits, early works, later work and so on. I did find the inclusion of other artist in amongst these sections a bit of a distraction and acted like a bit of a filler. You can get very close to the art pieces themselves, but it does get very crowded. This is where I had a bit of an issue - tour groups. Seriously you do not need to visit this museum with a group. There were several when I visited and they stand on mass in front of the painting making it near impossible to get past or to see the paintings. There was one private group - a family of 5 and the tour guide stood right in front of painting blocking the view, while explaining details for several minutes and taking out an iPad so the family so see close ups, this is very unnecessary. Seriously if the family had the audio tour I feel they would have gotten as much information that was required. I also feel that this museum has become one of those places that is a “tick off” on a list. There are definitely people who have no desire to be there - one teenager was making it very well known in a loud voice. The painting collection itself is good, but don’t expect to see the several of the “must see” pieces created by Van Gogh in this collection. Unfortunately these pieces are spread across the world in other big collections which is a shame as there they might only be one amongst many other paintings. There are stand outs in this collection and the museum does do well to showcase them. It is more of journey through his creations and explaining how developed into the artist. One the ground floor, where the lockers and audio tour pick up is there is a good museum shop if you want to purchase anything with several of the collection artworks featured. Would I recommend going to the museum, yes I am happy that I did go just a few things did make it not as good as I would have expected.

Worth the trip from London by itself.
The chance to visit the Van Gogh museum was one of the main reasons I spent a few days in Amsterdam, and I wasn't disappointed. First, a word of caution - book in advance! I was caught out on my first attempt to visit by finding that all slots for the day had already been booked. Fortunately, managed to get a ticket from the website for the next morning without much hassle. It's reasonably priced at about £25. Somehow, the lockers are FREE (!), but be sure to start your day early, as they're on a first-come-first-served basis. You don't even need a token, just to remember a six-digit unlock code! The personalised audio tour was a real bargain at about £5 - significantly less than it would be to hire a guide, and you can go at your own pace... A really great option if, like me, you're autistic and just want to wander quietly without having to interact. I did notice people in a group next to me saying they were having problems with theirs, but I didn't experience any of that. As for the art... what can I really say? I've been lucky enough to see a few of Vincent's works in the Muse D'orsay and some other places, but the size of the collection on display here dwarfs them all. The layout takes you through his early influences that lead to a fixation on simple, rural life; through his Paris period, where he matured and developed his personal style and finally in to his latter days in Arles. If you're interested in Vincent, o in art in general, it's wonderful. if you're not, I'm curious about why you're reading this review, let alone considering going!

A fabulous museum dedicated to a genius .
This is an extraordinary museum. The paintings and drawings by Van Gogh are breathtaking and the art by others is equally stunning. I recommend your renting the audio guide. It was very informative . Gift shop is lovely.

Wonder museum
Lovely to see the original works of Van Gogh and hear about his life. You learn how his struggles impact him and his work. Wonderful museum.

Awesome museum, takes about two hours to go through, very well done
This was one of the highlights of our trip to Amsterdam for me personally. I thought the museum was very well organized, and a great variety of work from van Gogh was on display. We got advance tickets for 9 AM so that we could get it before the museum got too busy, because it was definitely crowded by 10 AM. We visited in March, and I can only imagine how busy it gets in the summer.

A must Gogh!
Such great paintings here! Most of them are Van Gogh classics, so this museum is like nothing you’ve seen before! It’s a little expensive though, Rijksmuseum is honestly a better deal and has much more art, but Van Gogh museum is defiantly a must go whether you’re a local, or visiting Amsterdam! Such cool art from Gogh and others and it tells you a ton about Van Gogh’s life as well!

New discoveries
Van Gogh is instantly recognisable in his art, so visiting the museum housing his biggest art collection was something not to be missed. To be expected, so much better in person! We thoroughly enjoyed the journey through Vincent’s life and his inspirations, and experienced a clearer understanding of the man behind the art. The joy and happiness he felt in the rural countryside, his close bond with his brother as well as the challenges he faced - and his everlasting legacy in the colour he brings to future generations. Fittingly, the exhibition awes with those most famous pieces like ‘Sunflowers’, but also introduced us to new favourites, best brought to life in person, like ‘Almond Blossom’. A visit to Amsterdam is not complete without playing homage to one of its best known sons. Amazingly a decade of intensity created his artwork of over 2000 pieces, none of which sold in his all to short lifetime. We are all very fortunate to be able to share in his creations.

Amazing
Brilliant museum, great pieces of artwork the temporary exhibition of Matthew Wong was outstanding! Staff was super friendly as well, and we had good chats with them about what they thought of the pieces of art

Beautiful
Of course you don't want to miss this. This is probably the number one attraction in Amsterdam. This museum is very well thought and does have a beautiful collection. Even the children loved, which is a saying a lot

Van Gogh was a Machine
The brush strokes. They’re magic! The thicker and wider, the more magic! Van Gogh considered himself a failure… My hope is that Van Gogh knows how much his works are celebrated, respected and appreciated. Many of these impressionist artists didn’t live to see their significant success and impact on the world. He took his life at 37 years old due to multiple bouts with mental health! I know a lot about Van Gogh but here is what I learned on this visit. 1. He drew 1100 works. I knew he dabbled in etching/drawing but I had no idea there were 1100 works. 2. He produced 900 paintings in 10 years. I knew he died young but I didn’t know the amount of paintings he produced in that time. This is on average…a painting every 30 hours. Math Break - that is 2,000 works in 10 years! 1100 drawings and 900 paintings! So Van Gogh was a machine! 3. Van Gogh painted himself because he couldn’t afford models. He also painted over his art works and on the other side of his art works because the canvases were so expensive. 4. Van Gogh’s mental health doctor was Dr. Gachet. I didn’t know he lived with his doctor for some time and his doctor was also an artist. Greatly enjoyed this visit! Will be back!

An Amsterdam must visit
Located in Amsterdam’s museum quarter, the Van Gogh Museum is a must-visit for any art lover or admirer of Vincent Van Gogh. The museum is well-organised and simple to navigate, with helpful staff members available to answer any questions. The lockers are easy and free to use. It was amazing to be able to view in person 'Wheatfield with Reaper' and ‘Garden of the Asylum’. The museum never felt overcrowded and you always felt you had plenty of time to look at everything. The museum has a vast collection of his lesser-known works, which allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Van Gogh’s early life. The museum also includes other contemporary artists from the Impressionist clan like Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin. Remember to book a ticket before arriving, it does get sold out. I highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

A must see in Amsterdam!
Visited in February & pre-booking on line still essential as slots get booked. Tour guide good with simple, interesting commentary; blown away by the paintings on display- sunflowers alone made my day! A must see.

Some of Vincent’s paintings
Here you will find many of VVG’s works from the 1880s including the renowned sunflower masterpiece. The museum is spread over three floors and can feel busy but there are photo opportunities as long as you’re a little patient.

A bit pricy, but worth the visit!
This museum is well worth a visit. It has 100’s of paintings by Van Gough and other fellow artists, which make-up a fabulous display of art. I would recommend buying an audio tour to accompany your visit. It’s not mandatory, but it does a really good job of telling you Van Gough’s life, which gives you a greater appreciation of the art on display. I do think the tickets are quite pricy €22 each and an additional €3.50 for the audio tour. Also, this museum doesn’t have all of the collection - there are still a few famous paintings that are housed in other galleries around the world (e.g ‘Starry Night’). However, this is still a brilliant collection and I would highly recommend for your visit to Amsterdam!

Just great! Don't miss it. Van Gogh's life story along with a large number of his works. So interesting! Make sure to buy tickets well in advance.

Well worth a visit
Got to the museum easily by tram. Book tickets in advance to ensure entry. You queue up outside the museum at your designated entry time. Didn’t have to queue long but take a waterproof or umbrella if weather is not good. Bag security check inside. Audio guide available. We didn’t use the audio guide and found walking around the museum and reading information available sufficient to learn a lot more about the artist works and his life. We were a lot more informed by the time we left. We really enjoyed our time at this museum. Our time slot was about 16.15. Unfortunately though, we didn’t have time to have a good look round the gift shop. Toilets available, lifts to all floors, timed entry ensured the museum wasn’t crowded. Free lockers also available. Don’t know if there was a cafe in the museum but there is one close by.

A great place!
A great place to find out about one of my favourite artists and view his paintings. The museum was busy on the Sunday afternoon we'd pre-booked tickets for but still allowed us plenty of space and time to enjoy the exhibits. It's a shame there was no starry night on display and no mention of it either.
Feb 19, 2024AdrianG866
Well worth a visit.
Sensibly, the number of visitors to the museum is capped, so you really need to book online, in advance. It does get busy, but you can see & read the exhibits, and it's not what we would call overcrowded. The audio tour is good value & very informative, giving you a good insight into Vincent's life, influences & works. We left with a vastly improved knowledge & understanding.

Beautiful museum versus system failure
A wonderful experience to see this wonderful artists work. Beautifully curated in a thoughtful way and it was lovely to find out a bit more of the background to these works of art. Do book in advance as even on a cold Monday February morning, there were signs saying it was sold out for the day. The organisation for lockers for bags and coats is great and easy to use, no coins required and made for a very comfortable visit. The museum does say no photos to be taken, but does not seem to enforce this policy. This results in longer queues in front of the paintings as visitors vie for position to pose or take the perfect shot. It also means that one can almost seem rude to go and look up close at the painting, the colours and brushstrokes as you feel in the way and blocking the shot. Each to their own I suppose. The only real shadow on the visit was that the museum had a system failure which meant the gift shop was closed, just as we were in the queue to pay for our souvenirs. We asked if we could pay cash, but were refused. Why oh why have many places converted to card payments only with no back up plans for blips? Seems really silly that they couldn’t handle this situation and basically just shut down. It was dealt with in a very insensitive manner, we were all left disappointed and it would seem it wasn’t the first time this has happened, as one staff member referred to the situation as ‘again’ and appeared quite gleeful about it. It’s no consolation to be told to buy online - not all items are available online, including postcards and other smaller items (maybe we should have just joined in and taken those photos). It also doesn’t help when you don’t live in EU Europe, so have to add on expensive shipping and local taxes/ customs. Especially when you have the things you want in direct sight, less than a metre from you with cash in hand. There was no customer service at all. No staff member seemed particularly bothered and although it seems silly to bemoan the closure of a gift shop, it was difficult and disappointing as a parent to try to explain why the shop would not accept ‘real’ money. I emailed the museum later that day asking if they were back up and running in the shop. I got an email back later the next afternoon (after 24 hours) inviting me to go to the general museum shop in Museumplein, as although the systems were back up, we would not be welcome and not allowed to re enter the Van Gogh museum shop, as our tickets had been for the previous day….an extraordinarily inflexible attitude given the situation was not the fault of us, the visitor. Some flexibility to enter just the shop showing our previous days tickets would have been appreciated and surely not so difficult to manage. We went to the Museumplein general shop as suggested immediately after we got the email, but despite the reassurances from the Van Gogh museum staff the previous day, (maybe a quick ploy to get rid of us all), not all items are available in the general shop in Museumplein and again my daughter left slightly disappointed that a particular quilled card was again out of her reach. So, great museum, definitely visit, it’s beautiful. But Van Gogh Museum, organise yourselves. If visitors wanting to buy souvenirs from the gift shop seems unimportant and banal to you, close the shop permanently? Or simply have a back up plan and accept cash in such circumstances or simply just allow visitors the chance to re enter the shop on another day showing their previous days tickets. Would it really have been so hard?

definitely worth a visit
a really thoughtful, thorough collection of works by Van Gogh and fellow artists linked to his life and work. it was amazing to see some of my favourite artworks in person and discover more of the fascinating story of the artist who created them. The main reason I would give the museum a 4/5 is the price (maybe i’m just used to UK museums being free?) and the fact the gift shop was closed :( the staff were super nice about the closed gift shop and obviously no blame to them but i really wanted to get some van gogh / pokemon bits 😭

It is a must!
This is a must, I knew of Van Gogh but after being here I am now a fan of his life work! Knowing now how many paintings he did I wonder if there are any out there that are hanging on someones wall and they don't even know it! Very interesting and it has given me a passion for more.

A place to visit and embrace
I really enjoyed my visit to this museum. Presented collection is a mix between Van Gog’s paintings and pieces connected to his friends, including those artists who aspired him. To see all of its beauty, one must reserve min. 3h.

Beautiful pieces of art. Little packed in there with other tourists. So many great pieces of art to admire though. Well worth the trip.

Very well done
Don't sleep on getting your tickets. We walked over there thinking we could just go in, no can do. We asked the attendant how we could tickets. They release a few each day around 4pm, but get them quick. It took me a couple of tries to get them. It wasn't crowded until about 11, then it just got unenjoyable. We started in the Seine area and that was definitely my favorite part. Maybe a lot of folks dont go to that section, but it was quiet, people were very respectful of space. You go to the main section and it was chaotic. You will get a good sense of Van Gogh's life and timeline of when he painted and his mental health struggles. I thought the museum did a good job of covering that part of his life. Free lockers for your booksack/coats and restrooms were clean.

Van Gogh +
It was really nice to see some of Van Gogh's famous works up close. The stories that accompanied the paintings were certainly helpful. The projected images on the lobby walls were very nice. What I didn't expect was that there were quite a number of paintings of other artists. Sometimes I felt they were distractions. One tip: True for most museums in the area, consider coming early. Guests enter at specific times but can leave anytime. So the place gets a little crowded if you arrive later.

Must see
This museum is “must see” museum for every art lover when you are in Amsterdam...we saw a masterpieces of Van Gogh and also other famous painters. We bought tickets online in advance and I recommend everybody to do the same. Museum is not big so you can have a nice tour in 2 hours

Van Gogh Must Go
Excellent display of Van Gogh’s art as well as his history. Each floor has different explanation and display for his influences. There is a restaurant snd a coffee shop in the museum. They provide free lockers for your belongings. It was very crowded which requires patience to view a lot of the pieces. It was sold out when we arrived so I’m thankful we purchased a month in advance.

You won’t be disappointed, but book in advance.
Definitely a unique thing to do on Christmas Day. Culture and turkey! The layout of the gallery is very logical and flows well. The explanations on the wall of Van Gough’s life were very clear and insightful. To see so many famous pictures in one place is not something I will forget anytime soon. There is also a temporary exhibition about VG on the Seine. More intimate than the main gallery and in some respects more atmospheric. I deducted one point, simply because of the crowds. Perhaps unfair. Do go and you won’t be disappointed.
