Discover Amsterdam’s narrow canals

Over 100 km of waterways are running through Amsterdam’s historic city centre. Since some of the canals are too small for bigger cruise boats to navigate, a small boat cruise is the ideal opportunity to discover the city from a new perspective. The reduced size of the boat allows you to cruise through some of the oldest canals and neighbourhoods of Amsterdam.

This boat trip will take you on a journey through Amsterdam’s picturesque canal belt that was constructed during the 17th century, the golden age of the Netherlands, and is lined with the iconic merchant houses. You will sail through famous waterways including the Prinsengracht, Herengracht and the Keizersgracht as well as some of the narrower canals that can be found in the Red Light District.

During the boat tour, you discover Amsterdam’s beauty from a new perspective. Marvel at old bridges like the famous 'Skinny bridge' and churches as well as house boats that give the city its unique charm. The cruise is enriched by a knowledgeable guide who will tell you everything about the city’s best spots. Let the skipper know if there is something specific you want to see and they'll see what they can do to make it happen.

Choose your starting point

You can choose from three different locations spread across the city where you want to hop onto the cruise. Two of the starting points are located close to some of Amsterdam’s most famous museums.

On the Prinsengracht you can step on board near the Anne Frank House, where you can learn all about her time in hiding in a secret annex from persecution through the Nazis. Stepping on board a cruise afterwards might just be the perfect way to have some time to process what you have learned while surrounding yourself with the marvellous beauty of the city.

On the Stadhouderskade, you can board the Small boat tour near the national museum of the Netherlands, the Rijksmuseum. The museum is home to the famous painting Night Watch by Rembrandt, many other art pieces from both near and far as well as fascinating temporary exhibitions.

The last departure point for the Small boat cruise is on the Amstel river near Amsterdam's City Hall, across the water from the Amsterdam Icebar and near the famous Waterlooplein flea market.

Eco-friendly boats

The boats used for the Small boat cruise are both environmentally friendly and more silent than regular boats. This way you cannot only make your trip more sustainable when visiting Amsterdam, you can also listen to the various sounds of the city as you cruise through the historic centre.

Since the boats are small in size, you can also enjoy the experience in a smaller group of people and have a more personal conversation with the skipper about the history and hotspots of the city.
