The occupation and the resistance
The Dutch Resistance Museum is dedicated to the resistance movement in the Netherlands during World War II. Right after the Germans bombed Rotterdam in May 1940, the Dutch surrendered and Nazi’s took over the streets of the country. People were faced with a choice: do we cooperate and do exactly what the Germans say, do we join the Nazi’s and help them or do we join the resistance movement?
This question is explored in the museum. The Dutch Resistance Museum helps evoke the climate of the war years by showing the lives of people who made different choices, with a primary focus on the resistance. This often extremely dangerous choice made people very creative in thwarting the Nazis and helping Jews and other groups of people who were being hunted down.
Holland in World War II
The museum's permanent exhibition takes visitors back to the forties, the period of the German occupation during World War II. The halls and walls that make up the décor of the Dutch Resistance Museum are full of photos to help evoke the war years. Much of the collection consists of artefacts collected from the personal belongings of members of the resistance movement.
The exhibition covers all forms of resistance: strikes, forging of documents, helping people to go into hiding, underground newspapers, escape routes, armed resistance, and espionage. You can see strollers with guns hidden in them, forged ID cards, typewriters on which coded messages were typed and chessboards with hidden compartments.
As well as seeing the ins and outs of life in the resistance, you’ll also see what day to day life was like for people who choose to cooperate. What limitations did the occupation put on them and why did some of them decide to join the resistance after all? Another important part of the museum focuses on the Dutch colonial empire, the Dutch East Indies during the war. Where the population suffered terribly under the Japanese regime of terror.

Not to be missed
Fantastic organization and display. Very interactive. Lots of interviews making it very personal. The younger person’s area is also amazing. Visit even if not a young person. The entire experience had so much to read, see and do a visitor will want to spend hours. A wonderful way to share and teach about a very important historical time that can teach us a lot about today.

A truly fascinating museum
We visited this truly fascinating museum about the Dutch resistance movement in WW11. This museum tells the story of many of the unsung hero’s of this period. The museum in my opinion is well set out allowing the visitor to read the stories or listen to them on hand held devices. Definitely well worth a visit.

Excellent exhibition with a wealth of information from people involved in the resistance. Well worth a visit if you are interested in WW2 history. Good to get another country’s perspective of the war.

Great WW2 museum
Great museum about the German occupation and made very interesting with lots of personal accounts. I particularly liked that you could either read or listen to information as you walked around.

Incredibly well done
The museum is not overly large, but makes a huge impact. So much history, very well explained, without labouring points. A great testament to the resilience of human nature.

A must see for anyone with an interest in WW2 history
Great way to see how the Dutch people survived during the occupation in WW2 and the risks people took to do the right thing. A good layout and exhibitions that highlight what led to the situation the people of Amsterdam found themselves in and the collective/individual actions that were taken in the face of an aggressive and brutal regime. Would highly recommend to anyone with an interest in WW2 history

The best museum you can visit with your kids!
With our kids (ages 12 and 14 years old) did the Junior tour. After 2,5 hours (excluding the coffee break at the restaurant next door) the kids were still busy and enthousiastic to experience all the museum had to offer. Preferably we needed half an hour extra to finish the junior tour. We consider to come back to finish the junior tour and to do the adult one as well.

Informative, moving and honest.
Brilliant museum. Informative, moving and excellently put together. While the museum celebrates the Dutch heroes of the time as well as castigating the true villains, the overall tone is one of brutal honesty that makes you question what you would have actually done faced with the choices occupied civilians had, rather than what you like to imagine you would have done. Anybody with an interest in this part of history should go.

Highly Informative
Booked a visit for the last day of our trip to Amsterdam thinking it would maybe take us an hour or so but spent nearly 2.5 hours going around taking in all the stories and content. We found it completely fascinating with a huge amount of detail. WWII is a subject I am pretty interested in but didn't know a lot about the Dutch involvement in beforehand, so it was pretty informative for us both. Included in the very reasonable entry price was a free audio guide which you scan as you go round, learning of the different stories and people. If you are looking for a museum to visit in Amsterdam and the war is of interest to you then I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Important and well done museum.
This is an important and well done museum. I knew a bit of the history but not to this depth. All should visit it while in Amsterdam. There are so many fun and light-hearted sites to see in Amsterdam but it is important to remember the history and struggles the Dutch have had. I think children about 10 or older should also visit it with family and be able to discuss it after the exhibit. Thank you.

Excellent
Visited with my 9 & 11 year old children. All really enjoyed it. Luckily the kids let me read all the information and look at the displays, very informative. The kids area was excellent. Very educational and so much to do. Had a headset that translated into English, very easy to use. Highly recommend and I would go back for another visit

Fantastic and brilliantly informative museum.
Fantastic and highly informative museum with free brilliantly easy to use interactive guides. There was so much truly fascinating history which you could either listen to, read or watch of the brave Dutch resistance movement.

History through personal stories!
One of the best WW2 museums I've been to, better than Berlin. Very fascinating to see how much the Netherlands was impacted... this information isn't discussed much in other exhibits. This museum excels in providing information through personal stories of both the good guys and the bad. Very cool interactive displays as well. I easily spent two hours in here with the free guided headset. You must use one!

WW2 history in detail
A very detailed and interesting exhibition of the Netherlands during WW2. It is laid out chronologically and is simple to follow. A must go for those interested in recent history.

Unforgettable museum
This was an unforgettable museum and well worth visiting. Unfortunately we arrived an hour before closing so our visit was somewhat rushed, but this museum provided great insight into resistance activities in the Netherlands during WW2. The video which continued throughout the museum was excellent. I would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Well done
Quite informative. I now have a much better understanding how the Germans were able to control and entire population. A stepped approach with serious implications to those who resisted. Key factor was the alliance of Russian communists with rest of allies. Netherlands did mot want German ir Communist ruling them. WWII indeed tragic.

Thought Provoking
This was such a sobering, thought-provoking and profound experience. How can hate go so far to destroy people and how far will people go to preserve their lands and life. Definitely recommend a trip here.

Terrific upgrade to this fascinating museum!
I had visited this important museum several years ago so I was curious to see what they had done with the recent upgrade. The exhibits and films were engaging and informative. Worth a visit and I will return.

The story of the Dutch Resistance
The Verzetsmuseum Amsterdam - Museum of WWII Resistance is located in the Plantage, one of the most beautiful areas of the city. This museum was included in my I Amsterdam card. Here you can learn about heroic Resistance fighters, hear their testimonies, see their photographs, and follow their life from the beginning of the occupation until the liberation day. Many of them survived, but way too many had perished… The story of the Jewish deportation and terrible hunger in the city are the most painful… Highly recommend visiting this remarkable museum; especially if you are a WWII history buff, like me.

Excellent Audio Tour
I expected to spend an hour here. I was there almost 3 hours. It was fascinating. So many interesting stories. So many lives lost. So many people took risks to save lives. The museum is very visual and interactive. The audio tour was excellent. I definitely recommend. I had been excited to go to the Anne Frank Huis, but I feel this was as good or maybe even better.

An insightful, unvarnished and educational history of the Dutch peoples courageous resistance to tyranny during WW II
This museum is one of the best experiences I enjoyed in Amsterdam. The displays are immersive, thoughtful, comprehensive and educational. They offer insight to a complex story about the rise of national socialism in pre-WW II Dutch politics, the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, the resistance movement, persecution of the Jews and eventual liberation. The humanity and inhumanity is illustrated and explained by telling the individual stories of women, children and men who lived and died during this terrible period in history.

Underrated!
I started this day with a self-mapped walk of the Jewish quarter, then came here right when this museum opened at 10am. This was completely worth it. I'm a social justice activist myself, and I've been absolutely horrified at the the things happening in the world. I'm also a holocaust history nerd (enthusiast seems crass here), and I've always struggled to understand how something like this could happen in the Netherlands. This museum really helped me understand this history. I went through it very slowly, interacting with some of the exhibits as much as possible, listening to everything I could on the audioguide, and really trying to be present with the information. It's a lot, and it can certainly overwhelm you--I have a feeling a lot of people need to pick and choose what they engage with, and it's fine. I ended up spending about 2.5 hours here, and it was totally worth it. I'm so glad I went. I think this was the most underrated spot I went to in all of Amsterdam

Brilliant, fantastic . I cannot praise it enough
We pencilled in up to two hours for this visit but we stayed for four hours . From the start to finish was amazing. You have an audio guide that was second to none. You can do it in the order you want and if you miss a bit you can go back and point your audio gadget at he piece you have missed and listen to it . Real people's stories from the time, photographs and short films. I went in with very little knowledge and came out with a wealth of knowledge and a thirst to learn even more. The best museum I have been in for a long time.

Powerful, emotional and well constructed museum about Dutch resistance to the Nazis
This is an outstanding museum, telling the story of Dutch resistance to Nazi occupation. The personal stories, audio and visual resources and items on display are wonderful. I would definitely recommend this museum to any visitor to Amsterdam.

Excellent, well designed museum
We are so glad that we devoted 90 minutes to this museum. It tells the story of Dutch resistance during the Nazi era, and does it with appropriate detail, nuance and personalization. Having walked by the Anne Frank House, we actually opted for this museum instead of the tour there. And are glad we did, feeling we got a more expansive view of that horrific period. The Resistance Museum is extremely well and logically designed and curated. Further, it avoids easy, black-and-white answers fitting the history of that period in which the Dutch were trapped with no good or obvious options.

Everybody should visit!
Excellent exhibition. Well balanced with nuances, and presenting dilemmas for your thoughts. Very good presentation.

Glad we added this to our trip
Very clean, well laid out museum. Extremely interesting. The audio boxes worked really well. We had watched A Small Light about Miep Gies and her role helping the Franks during the German invasion. The museum has many, many more stories of the Dutch resistance and how they helped other humans. Experiencing this place inspires reflection that is needed now.

Powerful, well thought out exhibits
We found this a really powerful experience and the exhibits were very well curated. It focuses on the people involved in World War Two and the resistance. Fascinating, inspiring, and sad stories. The audio tour was helpful and there are plenty of panels with additional information. The exhibits were very well designed and different from each other. There is a special kids exhibit that our kids really liked and so did we as adults. We spent over two hours here.

Well worth a visit!
Such an amazing and interesting experience, even better since their recent refurbishment. So thought provoking, sad and inspiring in equal amounts.

Great Museum!
We visited this museum on a very rainy day and were so glad we did. We learned a great deal about the brave men and women who tried to fight against the Nazi repression in Amsterdam during WW2 and also about what it was like to live in the Netherlands during that very difficult time. Your museum admission includes an audio guide that works very well. But if you would prefer to read the descriptions, they exactly reflect the audio.

Terrific experience at Verzetsmuseum (WW II Dutch Resisistance Museum) in Amsterdam
We started our tour when the museum opened so it was less busy than later. The arrangement of the exhibits, the personal stories that lend color to the broader events and especially the very easy to use audio guide (point at number on wall and it plays the appropriate segment) made it an outstanding visit. Well done to the museum for such an outstanding experience.

Resistance museum.
Although it was a bit difficult to locate we got a friendly greeting and very helpful staff. The museum.does have audio devices to help for those of us who couldn't speak Dutch to save our lives Easily used and the displays put a very "human face" to the occupation of the Netherlands. Learnt a lot of things and they didn't 'gloss' over the dark parts of this history. Anyone with a historical interest would be advised to add this to their Amsterdam itinery.

absolutely worth a visit (with kids)
Went with three kids aged 8-9-9 (Dutch), in order to see the children's-section. Very well told, in four stories. Kids learned more about WOII, from different perspectives. Combined our visit to Amsterdam with Anne Frank House.

Great museum
We visited this museum on our last day and it was really informative and i liked the way you could interact with the audio and go to the displays. My husband is very interested in the world war histories but I also found this interesting.

Makes you think
There was a lot to see at this museum. Personal stories, very good audio tour. Really makes you reflect particularly given the current rhetoric about immigrants. Hard not to see a comparison with the way that Jewish people were referred to by Nazis. It would be nice if people could just be kind to everybody and accept others that are different to them. Would recommend going here.

Great little WWII museum in Amsterdam.
Heard about this museum from a local Amsterdam resident and it did not disappoint. An incredible collection of stories and artifacts documenting the role of the Dutch resistance during WWII. Exceptionally well organized and can be easily done in less than 2 hours. But you will walk out with a whole new appreciation of what happened in WWII and the rule the resistance played. A great little museum and a museum that makes you think a lot as you go through it. Very moving at times and just exceptionally well done.

Very interesting museum
I liked that the history of the life of the citizens during the Second World War occupation and their resistance is presented through different periods and stories. Some sections are presented in an interactive mode and I really liked that I could see actual authentic objects and documents from that period arranged in dedicated related rooms and zones.

Impactful and full of emotion
This is a journey through the Dutch experience not excluding Indonesia during WW2. What it meant to be man woman and child, all ages, and Jewish. Those who chose to bravely fought the system and deny Nazi occupation. Refused to sign papers admiting they were Jews risking their lives. Those who chose to hide families, weapons, radios, supplies. A detailed account of the propaganda and the risk of the Orange Radio broadcasts and then illegal pamphlets from the Resistance. An outstanding collection of material in one museum and a must see to appreciate the history of the Dutch people.

One of the most important museums to visit in Amsterdam
This museum has been absolutely transformed since the last time I was there about 10 years ago. It’s a must see for anyone visiting Amsterdam. Without understand what the Dutch endured during the German occupation of 1940-45, you can’t understand where the Netherlands is today. With exhibits that present the different experiences of everyday Dutch citizens, resistance members/communists/Jewish people and collaborators, you really begin to think about what you would have done yourself in the same situation. Give yourself at least 1.5-2 hours. There has been controversy ( which I read in a January 2023 New York Times article) about the treatment of collaborators, I thought a very fair representation was achieved.

One of the "must do" activities in Amsterdam!
We took a group of teens from Canada. Hands down one of the best museums we visited! Engaging, informative, a great learning environment! Everyone was engaged & enjoyed it!
